MCC hosts fitness walk

The Fitness Center at McHenry County College will host the Fit for Life 5K Walk/Run 2008 at 8:30 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 5 at Lippold Park in Crystal Lake.

Proceeds from the race go toward purchasing exercise equipment for the special populations to use at the MCC Fitness Center. Some of these special populations include Northern Illinois Special Recreation Association as well as Special Education District of McHenry County. In addition, some users of the college's fitness center are wheelchair bound and need equipment that can accommodate their needs. The MCC Fitness Center accommodates stroke victims as well as people with traumatic brain injuries and cerebral palsy, among many other disabilities. The staff at MCC Fitness Center staff has modified their techniques and equipment to benefit the people with disabilities.

The MCC Fitness Center has made several equipment purchases to accommodate people with disabilities, including a NU-STEP, two total body conditioners with removable seats to accommodate wheel chairs as well as two rowers that sit a little higher off the ground.

The MCC Fitness Center promotes health and fitness to MCC students, staff,

faculty and the public. In keeping with its mission, the MCC Fitness Center staff encourages members of the community to participate in the Fit for Life 5K event to enhance their personal health and fitness. Fitness center instructors are available to help anyone start a personalized exercise program.

Cost to race is $25 through Sept. 27 and $30 through race day. Volunteers are needed at the Fit for Life 5K event, including registration, water station helpers, starting line/finish line spotters and timing attendants.
