District 220 approves budget
Barrington Area Unit District 220 will be operating in the black for the 12th straight year after school board members approved this year's budget Tuesday. The 2008-09 budget calls for the spending $113.5 million, while taking in $115.8 million in revenue. Of the revenue, 80 percent will come from local property taxes. Of the $105.7 million in expenditures, 74 percent will go toward staff salaries and benefits, said Tom Beerheide, the district's director of fiscal services. Highlights of this year's budget include nearly $15 million for the construction of a new early learning center and renovations to Barrington Middle School Station Campus. The budget also includes money for seven additional teachers. The budget runs through June of 2009.
Police investigate wounds
Elk Grove Village police said they are investigating injuries inflicted on a 43-year-old man who was brought by people he works with to Alexian Brothers Medical Center in Elk Grove Village Tuesday evening in a semiconscious state. Police were dispatched to the hospital at about 6:30 p.m., said Detective Sgt. Michael Gaspari. Police are interviewing the man's work associates to determine when, where and how the injuries occurred. Gaspari didn't specify the exact nature of the injuries, but described them as "serious bodily injuries." Elk Grove police are working with Rolling Meadows police on the investigation, he said.
Lift station work begins
Construction started this week on a controversial lift station in Long Grove. Checker Road will remain a one-way street during the construction. The road will be open only westbound through the construction, which may last until December. Residents are unhappy with the station, which they say is a hazard on the S-curve road.
