In praise of St. Viator's Blue Ribbon

In these times when public schools are failing to hold up to the standards that the government sets it nice to know that one of our local private schools surpasses.

St. Viator High School in Arlington Heights was named a Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education, one of only three private high schools in the country, and should be congratulated.

It is too bad that such an honor was just noted in the Sept. 10 edition under "Northwest suburbs in 60 seconds". I would have thought such an honor, for not only Arlington Heights but also the state of Illinois, would have warranted a little more press. Is 60 seconds all you are able to give when the front page story is about brothers having children born on the same day? A wonderful story but is it more important than the excelling of one of our schools nationwide? Or the other front page stories about O'Hare expansion delays (again) and dogs being rescued.

As important as these things are, I think that the achievement of the school, students, and staff deserves a little more notice. Many people have given up a lot personally to achieve such status. It is not easy nor is it a fluke.

I for one commend you for your nationwide achievement.
