Aubert takes 2nd at Warren

Kristina Aubert (18:15) had a big day for Crystal Lake South's girls cross country team Saturday, running an 18:15 to take second place at the Warren Invitational. Gators' sophomore Marianne Collard (18:21) finished in third place to help South to a second-place team finish. Warren's Heather Olson won the race.

With four runners taking places 7-10, Crystal Lake Central was the class of the field as the Tigers rolled to the championship with 50 points. South scored 88.

"I'm proud of my girls and our third or fourth runner was sick and did not run today so that hurt a bit, but some other runners stepped it up," said CLS coach Niki Lydon. "Aubert dropped back with about 800 meters to go, but she looked strong and she likes to run against Heather."

At Kaneland: The freshman phenom is officially a sophomore sensation.

Kelly Whitley, a sophomore on the Geneva girls cross country team, is 3-for-3 in winning first place in every meet she's been a part of this year.

On Saturday, Whitley won Kaneland's Larry Eddington Invitational for the second consecutive year at Elburn Woods. Her time of 18:50.54 on the 3-mile course helped Geneva take second place overall. Dundee-Crown was a distant third with 116 points, followed by Kaneland (147), Burlington Central (151), Rockford Lutheran (154), Glenbard East (190), Glenbard North (214), Timothy Christian (259), Rochelle (261), Jacobs (266), IMSA (286) and Westminster Christian (375).

Kelsey Seiler (sixth) led the way for Dundee-Crown, along with Claira Himmel (16th) and Katie Gross (28th).

"Anytime you get a trophy here, that's a real accomplishment," Dundee-Crown coach Tom Smith said. "It's a tough meet. A couple of (the Chargers' runners) weren't sure how they were going to come out after being sore the past couple of days, but they had a great race."

Maggie Gannon and Markelle Turk's back-to-back 10th and 11th-place finishes helped Burlington Central finish fifth overall.

Boys cross country

CL South at Warren Invitational: With 162 total points, Crystal Lake South collected fifth place honors competing in the Warren Invitational. South's push for fifth was led by Uvodich, and the Gators' next highest finishers were David Lundine (30th), John Ryan (37th) and Wade Kilian (38th).

"Josh (Uvodich) struggled today and he should have been with the leader but he fell off," said South coach Rich Eschman. "We could have done better today, but we had guys who were sick during the week."
