Pair arrested on charges of robbing rent money

A Lake in the Hills man and his friend remained locked up in the McHenry County jail Wednesday, a day after police arrested them on charges they stole an acquaintance's rent money.

Brandon J. Kempkins, of Lake in the Hills, and Kurt R. Sahlberg, of Crystal Lake, each face a robbery charge stemming from the incident early Saturday morning at a Crystal Lake motel. The two are both 21.

Authorities said the two men went to the victim's motel room about 4:45 a.m. Saturday and through the threat of force took $262, a mobile phone and a $50 prepaid Visa card from him.

"They knew he had money and they wanted it," Crystal Lake Deputy Police Chief Dennis Harris said.

McHenry County Sheriff's deputies arrested both men Tuesday and transferred them the county jail where they remain Wednesday, unable to post 10 percent of their $200,000 bonds.

The charge against them is a Class 2 felony punishable by up to seven years in prison. Both are scheduled to appear in court Sept. 16.
