McHenry County AARP: The McHenry County Chapter of AARP will meet at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 11 at the Fountains of Crystal Lake on Route 31 one mile north of Route 176. The speaker will be Craig Strubue of Merrill Lynch on seniors better managing their money. Refreshments will be served. Square Dancing Club: The Batavia Bachelors and Bachelorettes Square Dancing Club meets for the fall at Free Methodist Church, Third and Walnut streets in St. Charles. Dancing is from 8 to 10:30 p.m. on the second and fourth Fridays. On Sept. 12, Bobby Poyner will be the caller with Anna and Howard Hoffman as the cuers. Kane County Audubon: At 8 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 14, join the bird walk at Sauer Family Farm Kane County Forest Preserve. Meet in the parking lot at Peck Farm, 38W199 Kaneville Road, Geneva to car pool to the forest preserve. For information, call Jon Duerr at (630) 584-5891.

Elgin Genealogical Society: The next meeting of the Elgin Genealogical Society will begin at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 18 in the main floor meeting rooms at the Gail Borden Public Library 270 N. Grove Ave., Elgin. A video presentation of a genalogical response to the book "Misha: A Memoire of the Holocaust Years" by Misha Defonseca will be presented. Guests and new members are welcome. VFW Watch City Post 1307 Ladies Auxiliary: The monthly meeting was held on Aug 20 at Post 1307. The Ladies Auxiliary were represented at the B Co. 1/178 Infantry Farewell Ceremony on Aug. 23 at ECC. The Ladies pray are soldiers will be kept out of harms way. We wish them the best of luck.

The Ladies will be marching in Elgin's first Patriot's Military Parade to be held at 9:30 a.m. Sept. 13 at ECC. Come out see Elgin's first Patriot's Day Parade.

The Auxiliary is sponsoring a Blood Drive in conjunction with Heartland Blood Center from 3 to 7 p.m. Sept. 16 at VFW Post 1307. The public is welcome. Call Lynnetta (847) 428-3020 for reservations; walk-ins are accepted.

For Make A difference Day, the ladies are doing a two-month food drive, Sept. 1 to Oct. 24, to help the local food pantries. If you would like to donate items, call Kathy at (847) 697-6034 or Lynnetta at (847) 428-3020.

The Auxiliary also is launching a project to make and donate lap robes to our veterans in VA hospitals and nursing homes. If you would like to donate a lap robe call Mary at (847) 888-2002.

Barrington/Northwest Community Associates: The Art Institute of Chicago is currently hosting a landmark exhibition - "Benin Kings and Rituals: Court Arts from Nigeria." Illuminating Niberia's royal history, the exhibition features coveted icons of African art that have never before appeared in an all-inclusive presentaton. These artifacts trace Benin's growing wealth and priminence during the 16th and 17th centuries and include bronze figures, ivory icons, altar heads, wall plaques, etc. Also included are artifacts reflecting the reconfiguration of Benin's monarchy following the invasion of British forces in l897.

Members of the Barrington/Northwest Community Associates will have the opportunity to tour the exhibit after listening to an illuminating lecture given by Jeff Nigro, Director of Adult Programs at the Art Institute. The date for this event is Thursday, Sept. 18. The fee is $70 dollars which includes transportation, lecture and lunch at the: Powerhouse Restaurant. Signal Hill DAR: Signal Hill Chapter of NSDAR will hold their first meeting of the fall season, Tuesday, Sept. 16 at the Barrington Area Library, Room "A", 505 N. Northwest Hwy., Barrington. Business meeting will start at 11:30 a.m. with social period and refreshments to follow at noon.

Shirley Beene, a former U.S. Marine, will present the program at 1:00pm. Her topic will be "Marines-In the Era When Women Were in Favor."

Constitution Week is Sept. 17-23. Signal Hill had a presentation commemorating the Constitution throughout the month of August, in the display case on the first floor of the library.

Atcha will discuss: What would trigger an audit; What the DOL expects to see in your fiduciary file; What are good practices and What are prohibited practices.

Illinois Fox Valley SHRM meets at Hennessy Restaurant in Elgin, Just north of I-90 off Randall Road, the third Thursday of every month for a luncheon with versatile programs directed towards the Human Resource Professional. Fox Valley Beaux Arts: Fox Valley Beaux Arts will hold two gatherings in September at Villa Verone, the Italian restaurant in downtown Elgin at 13 Douglas Ave.

At 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 18 members and guests are invited to dine while enjoying jazz. Then at 6 p.m. the following Sunday, Sept. 21, Villa Verone will entertain diners with opera and Broadway music.

Dundee Township Historical Society: The Dundee Township Historical Society will present its historic housewalk from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 20.

Five houses and four gardens will be featured on the walk. The homes include a "Colonial Cottage" (1922), a Greek Revival (circa 1850s), a charming home of brick and stone (1949), a grand Victorian (1890) and a home reminiscent of the English countryside (1928). The four beautiful gardens are individual and unique in design.

Advance tickets are available at Family Pride Cleaners, 537 S. Eighth St., Route 31, and at the museum, 426 Highland in West Dundee from 9 a.m. to noon on the day of the walk.

Tickets are $15 for the walk and $15 for the luncheon at the "Riverside Cafe" in Carpentersville. Picnic baskets and blankets will be available for those wishing to have their lunch on the east bank of the Fox River. For information, call the museum at (847) 428-6996.

CAGG-N: The ComputerAssisted Genealogy Group of Northern Illinois meetings are held at 10:30 a.m. on the third Saturday of each month at the Schaumburg Township District Library,130 S. Roselle Road, Schaumburg. The subject on Sept. 20 will be "Who Stole My Newspaper: Chicago Newspaper Research." Moderator is Dan Niemiec.

Donor Club: The Donor Club of Elgin will present its traditional book review and tea at 1 p.m. Sept. 25 at the First United Methodist Church, 216 E. Highland Ave., Elgin. The tickets are $12 each and are available from members or by calling Joan at (847) 888-3453 or Shirley at (847) 741-6663. Limited tickets will also be sold at the door. Tea, coffee and cookies will be served. There will be homemade cookies, peanut brittle, breads and cupcakes for sale as well as some gently-used books. A basket raffle will also be held.

This is Barbara Rinella's 22nd year of giving book reviews for the Donor Club. This year's selection is "Loving Frank" by Nancy Horan. It is a beautifully orchestrated rendering of the affair and the inner lives of Frank Lloyd Wright and Mamah Borthwick Cheney. In 1903, Mamah and her husband, Edwin, had commissioned the renowned architect to design a new home for them. During the construction of the house, a powerful attraction developed between Mamah and Frank, and in time the lovers, each married with children, embarked on a course that would shock Chicago society and forever change their lives.

Jewish Genealogical Society: The Jewish Genealogical Society of Illinois welcomes Stephen Morse. He will discuss how to use his "One-Step Web Pages: A Potpourri of Genealogical Search Tools" and "One-Step Web Pages: A Hodgepodge of Lesser Known Gems" at 1 p.m. Sept. 21 at Temple Beth Israel, 3601 W. Dempster St., Skokie. This program is free to members of the Jewish Genealogical Society of Illinois. Women in Management: McHenry County Women in Management will hold two mum sales to benefit its scholarship program. The sales will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 20 in the parking lot of Althoff & Associates, 4103 W. Crystal Lake Road in McHenry and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27 in left-side parking lot of Crystal Lake University Center, 100 S. Main St., Crystal Lake.

The potted mums are furnished by Countryside Garden Center, Crystal Lake. Proceeds support WIM's annual college scholarships for local women.

• September luncheon: Illinois State Senator Pamela Althoff (R-Crystal Lake) will speak at the McHenry County Women in Management's September luncheon.

The luncheon will be held at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 18, at the Boulder Ridge Country Club, Lake in the Hills. The cost is $30 for nonmembers and $25 for members.

Althoff will speak about women's issues in politics; what is proposed, what has been approved and how to become involved. She will discuss recently-approved bills she sponsored including House Bill 5596, to increase awareness of women's heart health. A question-and-answer session will follow.
