St. Viator's Halpin nets coaching honor

St. Viator boys golf coach Jack Halpin has received the 2007-08 IHSA Boys Golf Coach of the Year award.

In 2007, Halpin's Lions won the Class 3A state, sectional, regional and East Suburban Catholic Conference championships. Halpin was also named the ESCC coach of the year.

"Coaching is something that gets me out of bed every morning and not many people have something like that in their life," Halpin said in a news release from the school. "I'll be out here coaching until the day I die. Not only do I love the game, but being part of the Viator family and building on our school's rich athletic tradition is so fulfilling."

Halpin started at Viator as the frosh-soph coach in 1993 and has been the varsity coach since 1996. His teams have won five ESCC, four regional and two sectional titles and his 2006 team was the Class AA state runnerup.
