Prospect survives Cougars threat

Conant never let Prospect get comfortable in Friday's Mid-Suburban League football crossover at George Gattas Stadium.

The Cougars drove to Prospect's 12 with just less than three minutes left and seemed in position to tie the game before an interception sealed the Knights' 28-20 victory.

But it was Prospect quarterback Miles Osei who seemed to have control of the game all evening.

Last week Osei had 390 total yards in the Knights victory at Downers Grove North. On Friday the junior was at it again, racking up 310 total yards.

Osei completed 17-of-23 passes for 186 yards and 1 touchdown and he ran for 124 yards on 21 carries to spark the Knights offense.

"He's definitely comfortable," added Prospect coach Brent Pearlman of Osei. "It's hard to believe he's a junior. He's as comfortable and in control of that offense of any quarterback we've ever had at this high school. He runs the show and he almost does it flawlessly. He really doesn't miss a whole lot."

After Conant had surged ahead 6-0 on its opening possession that gobbled up 10:20, Osei took control.

On Prospect's second possession Osei found Mike Przespolewski for a 9-yard touchdown and a 7-6 lead.

On Prospect's next possession, Osei's 12-yard completion to Sean Baltwoski put the ball on the 2, and the junior punched it in from there for a 14-6 halftime advantage.

Osei started the third quarter with a 45-yard zig-zagging run that put the ball on the 3 and two plays later the junior scored from the one giving the Knights a 20-6 advantage.

"I'm feeling pretty confident right now," said Osei , "I think we're definitely clicking as an offense, there's still room for improvement but right now were on pace."

Conant responded as senior quarterback Sean Smith found Ryan Amundson for a 31-yard score, narrowing the deficit to 20-14 with 6:25 remaining in the third quarter.

But on Prospect's next possession Osei found John Coen for a 17-yard completion on third-and-long, which set up Osei's third touchdown and 10th of the season.

"All the repetition, it's like second nature now," said Coen who caught 11 passes for 115 yards. "The offense is just flowing right now."

Conant didn't back down as Smith found Amundson for a 48-yard completion, which set up Smith's 10-yard scoring pass to Colton Ford with 5:09 remaining to cut the deficit to 28-20.

Smith also gained 100 yards on 27 carries to pace Conant's offense, but 4 turnovers, including 2 interceptions and the game-clincher by Prospect's Brent Schroeder derailed the rally.

"Their offense is absolutely lethal," said Conant coach Bill Modelski. "I never thought we could turn the ball over four times and still be in the game, we feel like we could have won the game."
