Bromm, Broncos pick off a win

Barrington proved Friday night it can win not only on field turf but on good old-fashioned sod as well.

A week after opening the season at home on their new artificial surface, the Broncos marched in to Rolling Meadows and scored a bruising 20-13 Mid-Suburban League crossover football victory in overtime on the natural grass of Robert A. Hoese Field.

After scoring first in OT, the Broncos secured the win when senior Jason Bromm picked off a Jim Garoppolo pass at the 2.

It was the first time in five that Barrington has opened the season with 2 wins.

"This is great," said Barrington offensive lineman Tyler Sinclair. "This team has been working their tails off all summer, and we've developed great team chemistry."

Meadows scored first on a 1-yard Daquan Edwards run, but the Broncos tied it up just before halftime on a 58-yard punt return by Terrance Terry.

The teams traded touchdowns (a 74-yard run by the Mustangs' Steve Orchell and a 53-yard Cody Seeger to Daniel Evers pass hookup for the Broncos) in the fourth quarter, but missed extra points by both teams sent the game to overtime.

"After Steve scored to give us the lead," said Meadows senior Tommy Davidson, "I thought we had them the way our defense was playing."

"Coach (Joe) Sanchez does a great job of keeping us level-headed," added Sinclair. "The knock on Barrington has been that once we get down on the scoreboard we get down on ourselves, but coach Sanchez knows how to pick us back up."

Barrington (2-0) scored first in overtime when Seeger (13-of-18, 150 yards) threw a 6-yard scoring strike to Dan Santoro on third down and Ryan Murach converted the extra point.

Then Meadows (1-1) got their chance and on second down Garoppolo, running away from pressure, flipped the ball toward the end zone, where Bromm was waiting for the interception.

"We got great pressure (on the quarterback)," said Bromm, "and that allowed me to make a play."

"I don't think we were able to match their intensity," added Davidson. "But now that we've been exposed (to an intensity level like this), we'll be ready the rest of the season."
