Rebuilding Conant is counting on growth spurt

Growth by Conant's seniors wasn't measured by a scale or tape measure.

It's the mental progression that made an impact on coach Bill Modelski.

"They've grown up quite a bit and figured some things out," Modelski said. "Last season opened their eyes to what they needed to do.

"Their attitude has been great and I really like this group."

The change in attitude is reflected in the senior secondary of Ryan Amundson, Mark Kosrow, Mitch Comstock and Ryan Andrews.

"I hope our secondary stands out," Modelski said. "They struggled back there last year but they've all grown up. Collectively they're pretty fast and they should pursue well."

Junior Otto Linderman, who returned an interception for a touchdown in last year's opener, returns at outside linebacker. Middle linebacker James Coleman started at tight end last year.

And there is experience up front in Anthony Pasowicz, Jake Prestia and Joe Patricelli.

There is also a big change offensively as the Cougars will spread the field for quarterback Sean Smith. Amundson will use his speed at receiver and Kendall Lane, Kyle Klosowicz and Matt McNiff are also expected to be threats.

Center Craig Davies returns at center and there is also youth and size on the line from sophomores Kenny Kalish (6-foot-4, 311 pounds) and Spencer Myszka (5-9, 220).

"We're a lot more athletic than the last few years on the offensive line," Modelski said.

And everything Modelski has seen gives him a lot more optimism.

"We are a significantly better football team, no ifs, ands or buts about it," Modelski said. "We're defintely more athletic - and we're better."

Especially with a better approach from Conant's seniors.
