Palatine Swim Team registration: 6 p.m. Aug. 21, Birchwood Recreation Center gymnasium, 435 Illinois Ave., Palatine. Tiger Sharks, a program of the Palatine Park District, will host early bird registration for the 2008-09 Short Course swim season. Fall soccer: Early bird registration for Mount Prospect Park District boys and girls instructional fall soccer leagues has been extended through Aug. 25. Early bird fee is $65 for residents and $75 for nonresidents (a $10 savings over regular fee) and does not include uniforms. Registration must be done in person at RecPlex, 420 W. Dempster St. Teams are formed according to neighborhood zones. All games are played on Sunday afternoons. Season begins Sept. 7 and runs eight weeks. Coaches are needed. Call (847) 640-1000.

Phantoms U12 travel tryouts: The Prospect Heights/Wheeling Phantoms U12 girls fast-pitch full-time travel softball tryouts will be at 5 p.m. Aug. 22 and 1 p.m. Aug. 24 at McDonald Field in Prospect Heights. All players are welcome and there is no fee to tryout. All players born on or after 1/1/96 are U12 eligible for the 2009 season. Players should bring their own equipment and water. Crushers U14 travel baseball tryouts: 10 a.m.-noon Aug. 23, High point Park,1198 Hermitage Lane, Hoffman Estates. THE crushers play a competitive schedule in the Mid-Suburban Baseball League and will play about 50 games for the season. Players cannot turn 15 years old before May 1, 2009. SAA Travel Baseball tryouts: Aug. 23, Polk Fields. 9 a.m.-noon 10U; noon-2 p.m. 11U; 2-4 p.m. 12U; and 3-5 p.m. 13 and 14U at Nathan Hale School, Falk Field. Dress in baseball clothing including pants, shirt, hat, cleats and protective cup. Bring personal equipment including gloves, bats, helmets and other gear normally used. Prospect Heights/Wheeling Youth Baseball & Softball: Tryouts for 11U, 12U, 13U and 14U boys travel baseball teams 12:30-5 p.m. Aug. 23 at McDonald Field in Prospect Heights. McDonald Field is immediately West of the Gary Morava Recreation Center at 110 W. Camp McDonald Road, Prospect Heights. There will also be an additional tryout from 8-9 p.m. Aug. 27 for anyone who cannot attend the tryout on August 23. For 2009 11U players must not turn 12 before May 1, 2009 and 12U players must not turn 13 before May 1, 2009; 13U players must not turn 14 before May 1, 2009 and 14u players must not turn 15 before May 1, 2009.
