Briefs: Assessments coming

Assessment notices have been mailed to property owners in Antioch, Avon, Cuba, Libertyville, Moraine and Zion townships. Grant Township assessment notices will be mailed the week of Aug. 25. This year, most taxpayers will receive a notice that reflects only the application of a township equalization factor to last year's assessed values. The factor appears on the notice. If the assessment changed by a different amount, it is do to a change in value specific to your property. To determine the equity of an assessment check www.co.lake.il.us/assessor. The deadline for filing an appeal is 30 days after the notice is mailed. That date also appears on the notice. For information on assessments or appeals, call your local township assessor or (847) 377-2050. Taxpayers also are reminded the second installment of real estate taxes is due Sept. 3.

More attend health fair

The 16th annual Kids 1st Health Fair served 1,654 children from 718 families, a nearly 22 percent increase over the 1,356 children from 601 families served at the fair in 2007, organizers said. The Aug. 6 fair in Waukegan was sponsored by the Lake County Health Department and Community Health Center, Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science and the United Way of Lake County. Officials said they did not know the reason for the increase in attendees. The fair provided immunizations, dental screenings, physicals and other services for children to meet school health requirements. Providers gave 681 physicals, 496 dental exams, 296 lead tests, 231 diabetic screenings and provided immunizations to 288 children among other services. Roughly 1,470 children participated in an asthma survey. It detected 148 children with asthma symptoms who had previously not been diagnosed. Those children are being referred to private providers or health department clinics for further medical evaluation and treatment where needed.

Adopt a highway

Business, civic, social, youth and not-for-profit organizations looking to volunteer for the good of their community can adopt a highway from the Lake County Division of Transportation. The program allows groups to work together as a team, twice a year, to pick up litter on both sides of their adopted stretch of road. Groups are provided with high-visibility vests, trash bags and safety information. Applications for the fall program are due by Aug. 31 and are available at the Division of Transportation office, 600 W. Winchester Road, Libertyville. Participants must be at least 10 years of age, and those 18 and under require adult supervision. Visit www.co.lake.il.us.
