Briefs: Purse-snatching arrests

Hanover Park police have arrested a pair of Streamwood men in connection with two purse snatchings that happened within the last two weeks. Jesus Rivas, 20, and Eduardo Mercado, 21, both of 1669 McKool Ave., were charged with robbery, Hanover Park Deputy Police Chief David Webb said. They were arrested Monday near Lake Street and Walnut Avenue after a 911 call, Webb said. One of the men would snatch the purse, with the other waiting in a getaway car, Webb said. The most recent robbery happened around 9:30 p.m. Monday at a grocery store at 7580 Barrington Road. Police tracked the two down using witness descriptions of the suspects and through the use of a stolen credit card used at a gas station, Webb said. Their bond information wasn't immediately available.

News boxes under review

Des Plaines aldermen on Monday will consider creating a mandatory modular news rack district downtown and at the Cumberland Metra train station. Under the plan, publications may lease a modular news rack from the city at an annual fee of $25 a unit. No advertising, other than the name of the publication will be allowed on the modular units, according to the proposal. Also, no individual news boxes would be permitted in the two areas. Aldermen will consider the change at their council meeting on Monday, which starts at 7 p.m. at city hall, 1420 Miner St.

District 15 approves mobiles

The Palatine Township Elementary District 15 school board gave approval this week for the continued use of several mobile classrooms throughout the district. Assistant Superintendent for Administration Jim Garwood said none of the mobile units houses permanent classrooms, but are used for special units like ones on geology and space. Some of the units are also used for storage. The mobile rooms will be used at Kimball Hill School in Rolling Meadows and Lake Louise, Lincoln and Winston Campus schools, all in Palatine.

No Muvico in Northbrook

Developers of Center of the Northshore in Northbrook said Thursday they have withdrawn plans to include a 12-screen Muvico theater in their project. Muvico opened its first movie palace in the Chicago area a year ago in Rosemont. Developers had applied to change plans for a fitness center to accommodate Muvico. But with the approval process bogging down construction on the upscale, multiuse project, developers said they decided to return to their original plan.
