Briefs: Mundelein HS presents "Biloxi Blues"

Mundelein High School presents "Biloxi Blues," a Neil Simon play, at 7:30 p.m. today and 2 p.m. Saturday in the school auditorium, 1350 Hawley St. Admission is a donation to high school's theater program. Tickets can be purchased at the door 30 minutes before each performance. Alumni from the past four graduating classes will be represented in the cast. Biloxi Blues is the second chapter in what is known as Simon's "Eugene Trilogy."

Vernon Hills run raises $8,000

The Vernon Hills Police Department recently raised $8,000 at its Run from the Cops 5K that will support the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund. The fund has helped give financial support to families of U.S. service members killed or severely wounded overseas since 2000. This was the department's first 5K race in more than 20 years. Officer Jeff Cielak said the event was extremely successful, welcoming more than 270 runners. He said they anticipated 100 to 150 people to join and were overwhelmed with the number of participants.

Stevenson official resigns

Veteran Stevenson High School board member Diane Holder announced her resignation Monday. She did not give a reason, officials said. Anyone interested in filling Holder's seat on the board should contact Stevenson by 9 a.m. Aug. 8. Candidates must be district residents, U.S. citizens, at least 18 years old and registered voters. Volunteers still sought

Vernon Hills Mayor Roger Byrne still is seeking residents interested in volunteering on a committee for the purpose of retail recruitment for the village. Byrne and village board trustees have set a goal of exploring further retail opportunities for the town. Officials said volunteers should have retail experience as brokers, developers or management. School gets energy grant

Alexander Graham Bell Montessori School at 9300 Capitol Drive in Wheeling has received a $50,000 grant from the Illinois Clean Energy Community Foundation to help design a new facility meeting the U.S. Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards for environmentally sustainable construction. The school, designed by Gillespie Design Group, and built by Vanderwerff Construction, will be the first "green" building in Wheeling. Classes in the building start Aug. 27.

BBQ at Schaumburg Airport

The Lima Lima Flight Team and Ronald McDonald House Charities will host a "Flying High BBQ" from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the Schaumburg Regional Airport, 905 W. Irving Park Road in Schaumburg. Admission is $5 for adults, $2 for kids under 16 and free for kids under 5. You can meet the Lima Lima pilots as they answer questions about their T-34 planes and formation flying, enjoy food from Pilot Pete's at a nominal fee and view Chicago news helicopters.
