Briefs: Bone marrow drive today

Officials at Wheeling Township are working to save a 5-year old child's life with a bone marrow drive from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. today at the township building, 1616 N. Arlington Heights Road in Arlington Heights. The child has a rare blood disease and needs a bone-marrow transplant, but no match has been found on the national donor registry. Potential donors, ages 18 to 60, undergo a swab test that costs $55. Another drive will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. July 27 at Willow Creek Community Church in South Barrington.

Late-night robber strikes

A man carrying a black handgun walked into a store on the 1900 block of West Golf Road in Schaumburg about 4:15 a.m. Thursday, but the male clerk hid behind shelves and called 911, police said. The intruder couldn't open the cash register and instead filled a plastic bag with 32 packs of cigarettes and a few rolls of pennies, then left on foot. A Palatine police dog couldn't find him.

Catching bugs in Barrington

The Stillman Nature Center in South Barrington is hosting a free bugs and butterfly event 2 p.m. Sunday. Staff will be searching the woods for butterflies, beetles, grasshoppers and other bugs. Bring a bug net if you have one, and since bugs will be handled, put a minimal amount of insect repellent on your hands. The center is at 33 W. Penny Road in South Barrington. Scouts collect donations

Scouts from Troop 570 of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Schaumburg will be collecting donations for care packages for U.S. troops from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. today at the Wal-Mart at 323 S. Barrington Road in Streamwood. A list will be handed out to shoppers with the request that they purchase items and place them in receptacles outside the store. 'Music Man' in Barrington

Barrington's St. Anne Community Theater is opening its production of The Music Man this weekend. The performances, featuring students in middle and high schools, are scheduled for tonight, Sunday and July 24-26. Friday and Saturday night shows start at 7:30 p.m., with Sunday matinees beginning at 2:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 for adults and $7 for senior citizens and children. Lego exhibit on display

The Northern Illinois Lego Train Club will have its work on display today and Sunday at the Barrington Area Library. The exhibit features, cars, trains and skyscrapers, all constructed out of Legos. The exhibit is open between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. today and 1 and 4 p.m. Sunday. The exhibit is free. The library is located at 505 N. Northwest Highway. Visit www.niltc.org.

Beware of identity theft scam

The Palatine Township Senior Citizens Council said it was notified by the FBI that an old identity theft scam is making a comeback. The council is warning seniors to beware of any calls purporting to be from court. The caller tells people they have failed to report for jury duty and that a warrant has been issued for their arrest. The caller then requests personal information for verification. Anyone receiving such a solicitation should hang up and report the call to the council at (847) 991-1112.
