Briefs: Film logo contest

The Naperville Independent Film Festival Family Matinee Committee is holding a logo contest for 10- to 18-year-olds. The winning logo will be used in all publicity, signs and communication regarding the matinee portion of the film festival. The logo must represent youths in film and coordinate with the colors of the film festival organization - red, black and white - and the name "NIFF Jr." must be incorporated. Logos should be sent digitally to Lhodak@aol.com by Aug. 1. The winner will be chosen Aug. 5 and receive an award with 10 tickets to the family matinee and a V.I.P. pass. Harper, COD top producers

Community College Week magazine has ranked College of DuPage and Harper College among the top 100 institutions in the nation producing associate degrees in 2007. COD in Glen Ellyn conferred 1,528 associate degrees, ranking it 58th, while Harper in Palatine was 65th on the list with 1,476 degrees awarded. Hoffman Estates-based American Intercontinental University Online, one of about 20 four-year schools on the list, ranked third with 5,126 associate degrees last year.

Arrest made after stabbing

Police arrested a 46-year-old man Lisle who is accused of stabbing another man during a fight early Monday morning. Terrence J. Maloney Jr., of 6077 Miller Lane, was arrested about 1:30 a.m. and charged with aggravated battery. Lisle police said Maloney was arguing with an unidentified man outside of a residence in the 2200 block of Abbeywood Drive when Maloney used a knife to "cut a severe laceration on the victim's right arm." Police said the fight started because the victim's wife was talking to Maloney. The victim treated at Edward Hospital in Naperville and released.

Shots fired arrest

Glendale Heights police arrested two men early Sunday morning after two homes were hit by apparent shotgun blasts. Charles D. Kral, 21, and James R. Kral, 19, both of unincorporated Glen Ellyn, each were charged with two counts of aggravated discharge of a firearm. They were arrested after two homes, one on the 400 block of Winthrop Avenue and another on the 1300 block of Davine Drive, sustained damage from shotgun blasts. Police said the men fired the shots after an altercation with three local teens, which police responded to earlier Sunday morning around 2:20 a.m. After that incident, police arrested Manuel J. Rodriguez, 18, of Glen Ellyn, and charged him with unlawful use of a weapon and underage drinking. Karina Bonilla, 17, and Eduardo Bonilla, 20, both of Glendale Heights, also were arrested. Karina Bonilla was charged with battery to a police officer and obstructing a police officer. Eduardo Bonilla was charged with underage drinking, resisting and obstructing a police officer.

Wheaton burglary

A home on the 500 block of south Blanchard Street in Wheaton was broken into during the day Friday while the residents were away. Police said unknown suspects forced entry to the rear door of a home and removed various items of property, including many DVDs. Anyone with information should call Cmdr.
