Disaster unemployment assistance for flood victims
Workers in 14 Illinois counties, including Lake, who became unemployed due to severe storms and flooding in June might be eligible for federal Disaster Unemployment Assistance, state officials announced Tuesday. Residents are eligible to apply for DUA if they are not eligible for regular Unemployment Insurance benefits. This includes workers who have not earned sufficient wage credits, sole proprietors, independent contractors, farmers and others. Claims must be filed within 30 days. Applicants should bring their Social Security number, and if possible, pay stubs and other documents showing earnings and employment. Lake County residents should contact the Illinois Department of Employment Security office, 800 Lancer Lane, Grayslake. Call (847) 543-7400. The office is open Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Post office lobby to close
The retail lobby of the Vernon Hills post office, 675 Lakeview Parkway, will be closed Saturday. Regular mail delivery will be unaffected by the change. Postal officials said there historically is a significant decline in retail traffic on a Saturday following a national holiday so staffing will be adjusted to give employees more time with their families during the holiday weekend. Customers who want to buy stamps, mail packages or ship urgent letters or packages on Saturday can use the automated postal center. Regular lobby hours will resume Monday.
Tepperfest
Friends, relatives and neighbors of Debbi Tepper, who died in May, are holding a fundraiser from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Round Lake Beach Cultural and Civic Center. Tepper left behind her husband George and two children. George Tepper is on dialysis awaiting a kidney transplant. Because of ongoing and previous medical bills, the family is facing foreclosure of its home. The fundraiser will include raffles, auctions, live music, food, a police dog and other activities. Tickets are $5 for adults and children under 5 are free. Donations also can be made at any Fifth Third Bank location or online at www.debbitepper.com.
