Briefs: Attempted child abduction

Hoffman Estates police are searching for two men who tried to abduct a boy of about 13 as he was riding his bike Wednesday afternoon. According to a police report, the boy was approached by at least one man as he was riding a bike around 3:30 p.m. on the 500 block of Geronimo Street. No one from the police department was available to provide further details Friday. It was unclear if the man or men came out of a home or a vehicle or if the boy was harmed.

Lions help flood victims

The Mount Prospect Lions Club and the Lake Zurich Lions Club will collect cleaning supplies from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday for flood victims in Moline and Quincy. Donated items will be accepted at the Mount Prospect Lions Club trailer at the north end of the club's farmers market, located at the west Metra train station parking lot in downtown Mount Prospect at Route 83 and Northwest Highway and at The Lions Den at 81 E. Main St., Lake Zurich. Lions clubs in Moline and Quincy will deliver the donated items directly to people who have been affected by the recent flooding. Items most needed include brooms, mops, rubber gloves, flat-blade shovels and bleach. Other cleaning supplies are needed as well.

Police checkpoint today

The Arlington Heights Police Department will conduct checkpoints today and Sunday. Today's checkpoint will be on West Dundee Road from 10 p.m. Saturday to 2 a.m. Sunday. On Sunday, the checkpoint will be on South Arlington Heights Road from noon to midnight. Police will check vehicle equipment, licenses and insurance as well as look for those driving under the influence. During the checks, police will slow traffic and stop cars at predetermined intervals.

Free Long Grove concerts

The Long Grove Arts and Music Council will continue a summer of free concerts Sunday with Chicago Outskirts, a big band, all-female jazz ensemble. The concert will be at 4 p.m. at Towner Green at Robert Parker Coffin and Old McHenry roads in downtown Long Grove. The concerts have refreshments available for purchase.
