Men convicted in robbery
Two Chicago men have been convicted of aggravated kidnapping, armed robbery and aggravated vehicular hijacking in connection with a November 2005 attack on an elderly woman. Loretta Wheeler was locked in the trunk of her car by her captors for more than three hours as they unsuccessfully tried to obtain the PIN for her bank card. Wheeler's ordeal ended only when her kidnappers crashed after a short chase by police, who noticed her captors driving the wrong way down a street. Twenty-year-old Tyre Howard was convicted Wednesday of the kidnapping charges. His accomplice, 19-year-old Demarcus Dunn, was found guilty of the same charges by a separate jury Tuesday. According to Cook County Assistant State's Attorney James McKay, Dunn and Howard were searching for someone to rob, when they saw Wheeler getting out of her car.
