Crystal Lake doctor 'an immediate danger'; license suspended

State regulators have suspended the license of a Crystal Lake plastic surgeon who was arrested in May after police say he tried to fill a phony prescription.

Bradford Roberg, 53, of McHenry was arrested May 13 after he tried to fill a prescription for OxyContin at a Mundelein CVS -- using the name of his wife's dead grandmother, according to court documents.

The Illinois Division of Professional Regulation has suspended Roberg's license to practice medicine in the state. The license was issued in 1982 and was set to expire at the end of July.

The June 12 order suspending Roberg's license says his actions are "an immediate danger to the public."

Roberg could get his license back, depending on the outcome of hearings before the state Department of Financial and Professional Regulation and the state Medical Disciplinary Board, according to the order.

The surgeon, who runs the Northern Illinois Plastic Surgery Center in Crystal Lake, wrote seven OxyContin prescriptions for his wife's grandmother between Jan. 21 and May 13, court records show.

The grandmother died on Jan. 21, according to the Division of Professional Regulation.

The Division of Professional Regulation would not comment further on the case.

Mundelein police have charged Roberg with forgery, a felony; possession of a controlled substance, also a felony; and obtaining a controlled substance by fraud, a misdemeanor.

Police released Roberg on a $50,000 recognizance bond.

A preliminary hearing for Roberg is set for 10:30 a.m. June 26 in room C120 of the Waukegan courthouse.
