Man charged in connection with McHenry drug overdose

A 28-year-old Chicago man Friday could face up to 30 years in prison on charges he sold a fatal dose of heroin earlier this year to a McHenry woman.

Carlton Maynor Friday was arrested on a charge of drug induced homicide, a Class X felony, in connection with a three-month investigation into the March 3 death of Laura Johnson.

Johnson, 27, was found dead at a friend's Woodstock home after she had apparently been using heroin. An autopsy and subsequent toxicology testing confirmed that she died as a result of a heroin overdose, McHenry County sheriff's police said Friday.

An investigation determined that Johnson, a known heroin user, had purchased the drugs from Maynor on the west side of Chicago, sheriff's police said.

The sheriff's Apprehension Unit arrested Maynor Friday morning in Cicero and transported him to the McHenry County jail.

Sheriff's Lt. Andrew Zinke said the number of heroin overdoses appears to be on the rise in McHenry County.

"It seems these days heroin is the drug of choice," Zinke said. "More frequently than not, we find that users are going to (Chicago) or areas around the city to get it."

Maynor, who was paroled last year after serving part of a three-year sentence on a drug charge, remained in custody late Friday jail on $250,000 bond. He is scheduled to make his first court appearance on the new charge Saturday morning.
