Briefs: Rotary scholarships offered
The Wheaton Rotary Club will again offer scholarships to local college students who can show they need financial assistance to complete their junior and senior years. The scholarship offers $3,250 for two years to permanent Wheaton residents who have a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or above on a 4.0 scale. The application deadline is June 20; applications are available at wheatonrotary.org.
Group gives $14K in grants
The Rotary Club of Glen Ellyn is awarding more than $14,000 in local community grants. Some of this year's recipients include Glen Ellyn Community Resource Center, Philip J. Rock Center and School, Bridge Communities Inc., DuPage PADS, Glen Ellyn Public Library, Open Door for Teens Inc., Glen Ellyn Park District, Glen Ellyn Youth & Family Counseling, Western DuPage Special Recreation Association, Family Shelter Services, B.R. Ryall YMCA, DuPage Senior Citizens Council, DuPage Community Clinic, Humanitarian Service Project and the YWCA of Metro Chicago West Suburban Center.
West Chicago lawn party
The Friends of the West Chicago City Museum this weekend are giving residents the opportunity celebrate Flag Day in an historic way. The group will host a summer lawn party from 1:30 to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Currier-Reed home, 241 E. Washington St. in West Chicago. Children will have an opportunity to play Civil War-era games from 2 to 3 p.m. and make flags from the Civil War period. Other event highlights include refreshments, live music performed by the Battlefield Balladeers and an appearance by Arvilla Currier. Tickets are $15 per person, $12 for members; $25 per couple, $20 for members; $30 per family, $25 for members. Children 2 years old and younger are free. Wheaton cops honored
The Wheaton Police Department recently recognized several members for their personal efforts as law enforcement professionals. The Distinguished Service Medal went to Cmdr. Joseph Eversole, Sgt. William Cooley and detectives Steve Hamill and David Zdan for their individual and collective efforts during two homicide investigations. Hamill also received the FBI Director's Award for his investigative work on four bank robbery cases. Anita Johnsen was given the Civilian of the Year honor.
