Park district did right thing by Scouts

The Roselle Park District did the right thing because it was the right thing to do.

They voted Wednesday to rescind their May 15 vote that would have allowed Roselle Medinah Softball Baseball Organization to store their equipment at the Roselle Scout Lodge, displacing Scout groups. They also voted to allow RMSBO to store their equipment at the park district's barn at Clauss Recreation Center.

The Roselle Park District was backed into a corner, trying to fulfill their obligation to provide storage to RMSBO, and the Scout Lodge was an easy alternative, disturbing, what they thought, the least amount of people. The community spoke up, and all of Roselle Scouting thanks you. The Roselle Park District now realizes how much the facility is used and how much it means to the community.

Upon investigation into the history of the Scout Lodge, an article in 1953 was found describing the Lions Club having a Hoe-Down on the recently poured slab, with Scouts serving refreshments -- that was truly community. Let's hope we, as a community, can continue this and keep the Scout Lodge and improve it so that the next generation can benefit from the efforts of five decades ago and our efforts today.

Training varies for doctors of nursing

We have the deepest respect for nurses, and the AMA wholeheartedly believes each member of the health-care team plays a critical role in ensuring patients get the best possible care.

But (regarding the article Monday, "Nursing schools make room for Dr. Nurse") it's an undeniable fact that a nurse with a graduate degree does not have the same education and training as a physician who has completed medical school and residency training, and it's misleading to patients for nurses to introduce themselves as a doctor.

While standards for the doctor of nursing practice (DNP) are presently being devised, nursing organizations currently recommend DNP students complete just 1,000 hours of "practical experience" after obtaining a bachelor's degree.

Physicians complete more than 12 times that amount during their graduate education. In addition to the two years of clinical rotations physicians fulfill during their four years of medical school, they also complete three or more years of full-time medical residency training.

The DNP program with the one-year residency training mentioned in the article is far from the norm. While one DNP graduate may complete a two-year program including a one-year residency, another may complete the program entirely online and without any patient-care experience.

The bottom line is: For patients to receive high-quality care, all members of the health care team need to be adequately trained and educated to provide the services they perform. Our patients deserve nothing less.

State must ban same-sex marriage

I'm a regular citizen stepping up to the plate and letting my thoughts be known that homosexual marriage cannot exist because the definition of marriage is the union between a man and a woman. For the benefit of a strong wholesome society, I would like to see a state constitutional ban on so-called "same-sex marriage." I have let my legislators know my thoughts.
