Briefs: DuPage gets a new judge
In a recent vote, DuPage County circuit judges picked Karen M. Wilson to become an associate judge in the 18th Judicial Circuit. Wilson is an associate in the Downers Grove law firm of Smith, Rickert & Smith. She also is a former seven-year DuPage County prosecutor. Wilson graduated from law school in 1991.
Man dies in collapse
Authorities are investigating the death of a 45-year-old man found Friday trapped underneath a collapsed garage in Westmont. Rescuers rushed about 11 a.m. to the 300 block of South Lincoln Street, where they found the body inside the collapsed structure, behind a home. The man's name has not been released yet.
Man charged in stabbing
A 22-year-old Darien man is accused of stabbing another man during a fight near Lombard. Joshua Schwabe was arrested early Friday at his home at 1110 Chalet Dr. on aggravated battery with a deadly weapon charges. Authorities said Schwabe slashed the victim with a serrated pocket knife about 12:15 a.m. Friday after the two argued in the man's home. The victim was treated and released at Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove. Schwabe also had a pending arrest warrant out of Darien alleging domestic battery charges. He remained in jail Friday evening.
Student wins $5,000
A sophomore at Lake Park High School in Roselle recently won $5,000 as part of a Safety Incentive Program drawing, Roselle police announced Friday. Manal W. Ayyad of Bloomingdale was among more than 500 students who turned in SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions) Contract for Life raffle tickets. The Safety Incentive Program is a cooperation effort between the Roselle Police Department and Lake Park to encourage students to wear seat belts and make better decisions when it comes to their safety. Students received raffle tickets for their participation in SADD-sponsored activities during the year. Winners were drawn weekly from the students who turned in raffle tickets. The grand prize drawing happened on May 17. The $5,000 prize was donated by Joe Kean of Friendly Ford in Roselle.
