Briefs: Teen arrested in threat

Police have arrested a 16-year-old in connection with a threat found Monday inside a boys bathroom at Hoffman Estates High School. The boy was cited with felony disorderly conduct, Hoffman Estates police Sgt. Jim Campbell said. The threat wasn't deemed serious, Campbell added. The case will be in juvenile court. Principal Theresa Busch interrupted classes Monday with a public address announcement to students. "It is important that you know behavior of this type merits the most severe disciplinary and legal actions available to us," she said. "We will be pursuing those, along with any potential costs involved with the investigation." Campbell said the arrest of the unnamed student was not linked to a threat found last week in a girls bathroom at the school. Any student cited with making such a threat could be expelled under school code.

Vandals spray-painted graffiti onto the south exterior wall of Streamwood High School at about 11 p.m. Thursday, police reported. Graffiti was also discovered on portable toilets near the tennis courts, on the football supply building, baseball dugouts, announcement booths on both the east and south fields, on the high school water tower and on a boulder near the student parking lot entrance, police said. A damage estimate was not available; no arrests had been made.

More signs for waterways

Sign improvements are coming to highlight recreational opportunities on the DuPage River and Salt Creek. The federal Recreational Trails Program is providing $28,055 to design, fabricate and install approximately 330 water trail signs along 40 miles of the DuPage River in DuPage and Will counties and along 20 miles of the Salt Creek in DuPage and Cook counties. There will be directional signs for parking, launches/landings, portages, dams and bridges; map signs; and signs on bridges that face car traffic to raise public awareness of the water trail. The Illinois Greenways and Trails Council recommended the grant be approved.
