Wrap: Fremd wins playoff opener

Host Fremd raced out to a 3-0 lead before intermission and went on to defeat Wheeling 5-1 in a first-round match of the Class AA state tournament.

The top-seeded Vikings (15-3-1) received a pair of goals and an assist from Susie Plager.

Also scoring for Fremd were Elise Katsokis, Allison Casey and Alex Ehr.

Ehr also earned an assist, and Laura Mayer added a pair of assists.

A trio of goalies, Allison Norenberg, Sam Ryan and Lauren Pusateri shared duties in the nets.

Fremd plays the winner of today's regional matchup between Prospect and host St. Viator.

Boys volleyball

Conant d. Elk Grove: In a battle of second-place division finishers, Conant rallied to defeat Elk Grove in three games, 18-25, 25-23, 25-20 in a Mid-Suburban League crossover contest. Leading the Conant attack was Dan Aloisio with 10 kills, while Peter Lauterbach added 7. Splitting the setter duties were Ryan Schraub with 15 assists and Drew Fisher with 14.

Prospect d. Palatine: Prospect utilized a potent 1-2-3 punch to fight off Palatine in three games by scores of 25-23, 25-27, 25-23 in an MSL crossover. James Hoffman had 15 kills, Kevin Reed drilled 14 and Scott Pickle added 13 for the Knights. Josh Doerr had 23 assists and Kevin Wolter racked up 14. Josh Rustman led Palatine with 9 kills and Zach Compton contributed 7, as B.J. Boldog set for 26 assists.

Schaumburg d. Hersey: Mike Wernert served up 4 aces, and Glen Frost and Mitch Wiskichen each had 9 kills as Schaumburg beat Hersey in three games by scores of 25-27, 22-25, 25-21 in an MSL crossover. Wiskichen also had 20 assists. Jack Welter had 9 kills and Mike Reiser added 7 for Hersey, as Chris Hoffman and Brad Peterson each recorded 11 assists.

Rolling Meadows d. Hoffman Estates: Ryan Kedzie and Weston Genovese each had 6 kills to help lead Rolling Meadows to a 25-12, 25-17 triumph over Hoffman Estates in an MSL crossover. Nick Marek (10 assists) and Brian Bourn (9 assists) handled setting chores for Meadows.

St. Patrick d. St. Viator: Sean O'Connor pounded out 7 kills, but visiting St. Patrick emerged with a 25-15, 31-29 victory in an East Suburban Catholic Conference matchup in Arlington Heights.

Mike Czopek added 5 kills and setting John Lopez had 15 assists for the Lions.

Softball

Rolling Meadows 5, Glenbrook North 0: Rollign Meadows' freshman battery of Kayla Mueller (3-1) and catcher Kelly Keyzer notched the shutout in the nonconference game.

The Mustangs (12-14) have won six of their last seven going into today's Mid-Suburban League third-place crossover at Palatine.

Junior Maddy Urban and senior Caitlin Adair had RBI singles in the second inning for a 2-0 lead.

The Mustangs added 3 in the third on Keyzer's 2-run single and an RBI groundout by Carissa Stewart that brought home Keyzer.

Mueller struck out five and walked two in 5 innings before the game was called because of lightning.

Regular catcher Angela Mahanna only batted in the game because of a thumb injury.

Buffalo Grove 4, Fenton 1: Freshman Maria Dax (6-5) tossed 6-hitter with 4 strikeouts to win the nonconference game for the Bison (18-13), who received a pair of RBI singles in the bottom of the fifth by juniors Meg Miller and Lexi Beuno.

BG added 2 in the sixth.

Andrea DiPrima's sacrifice fly brought home Katie Lee (triple) and Miller's flyball with an error on the play drove in Stephanie Rudolfi (2-for-3, 2 runs, double).

Palatine 5, Schaumburg 1 (3 innings): Pirates senior leadoff batter Nikki Linares was due up with freshman Katie Mnichowicz on first base in the top of the fourth when the lightning detector sounded.

The Mid-Suburban League West Division game was postponed a half hour later and will be resumed Thursday at 4:30 p.m.

Bre Quaritsch belted a 2-run single up the middle to score Nikki Linares (infield single, stolen base) and Caitlin Carpenter in the first inning. Pitcher Anne Wcislo added an RBI goundout for a 3-0 lead.

Nicole Chase's towering home run over the center-field fence to lead off the bottom of the second made it 3-1.

The Pirates (15-8, 10-5) added 2 more runs in the fourth on Carpenter's RBI double to right-center that scored Amy Modic (single), and a sacrifice fly by Stephanie Roto that drove home Joanne Jablonski (single) from third base.

Catcher Rachel Borgman also had a hit for Schamburg (10-14, 5-10).

Hoffman Estates 8, St. Viator 0: Junior Kaitlin Walsh threw a shutout with 8 strikeouts and 2 hits as host Hoffman Estates (9-19-1) blanked St. Viator in a nonconference game. Hoffman was led on offense by Rachel Marinoff (3-for-3, double), Jenna Pellus (2-for-3, double), Alex Wulbecker (2-for-3, double) and Natalie Miceli (3-for-3). Colleen Roberts also doubled for the Hawks.

Danielle Sipiora went 2-for-2 for the Lions.

Baseball

Alec Simpson threw a 2-hitter and Jack Meyer homered, doubled and drove in 3 runs as St. Viator (18-11, 9-8) rolled to the East Suburban Catholic Conference win in 5 innings in Chicago.

Simpson had 3 strikeouts and 2 walks. Brett Kay went 2-for-3 with 2 RBI and a double and Shane Owens went 2-for-3 for the Lions.
