Time Management: "Time Management: Making the Most of Your Time and Gaining Control of Your Life" will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 14 at the College of Lake County.
Topics will include goal setting, prioritizing, effectively dealing with interruptions and time-oriented delegation.

CNC training program: A new 24-week Computer Numerical Controls training program, provided at no cost to qualified students, will begin July 2 at the College of Lake County. One-hour information sessions will be held at 1 p.m. May 16, 10 a.m. May 19 and 4:30 p.m. May 21 in room T122 on the CLC Grayslake Campus. Information sessions will also be held at the CLC Lakeshore Campus at 111 N. Genesee St. in downtown Waukegan from noon to 1 p.m. on May 15 in room N119 and on May 21 in room N212.
The program provides students with the entry-level skills needed for a career as a CNC programmer, operator or set-up specialist; or as a machinist, tool maker or tool room machinist.
Applicants should be at least 18 years of age and meet entrance requirements defined on the application. Women are encouraged to apply. The training program runs from July 2 to Dec. 19, with classes being held three to five hours per day, four days a week.

Student Art: The 27th Annual Student Art Exhibition, a juried exhibit featuring artwork created by College of Lake County students, will be on display until May 17 at the Robert T. Wright Community Gallery of Art on the CLC Grayslake Campus.
Artwork in the exhibit was created by students enrolled in painting, drawing, graphic design, photography, ceramics, sculpture and digital media and design courses at CLC.
The Robert T. Wright Community Gallery of Art is next to the Library/Learning Resource Center on the Grayslake Campus. Horticulture Workshops: Four non-credit workshops will be offered at the CLC Horticulture building on the Grayslake campus:
• Annuals and Perennials for 2008 from 9 to 11 a.m. May 19.
• Shrub Pruning for Homeowners from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on June 4.
• New Home, New Yard from 1 to 3 p.m. June 28.
• Cuidado y Mantenimiento de Plantas Perennes (Perennial Garden Care and Maintenance) taught in Spanish from 9:30 a.m. to noon July 12.

"Little Shop" auditions: Auditions for the College of Lake County summer musical, "Little Shop of Horrors," will be held at 6:30 p.m. May 19 and 20 in the Studio Theatre of the James Lumber Center for the Performing Arts on the Grayslake Campus.
Those auditioning should prepare a one-minute song from "Little Shop of Horrors" and a 60-90 second comic monologue. A piano accompanist will be provided. Actors need only attend one audition, not both. Actors should bring an acting resume if they have one. Callbacks will be held from 6:30-10 p.m. May 22.
Rehearsals will begin June 2. The rehearsal schedule is Monday through Thursday evenings (with the occasional Friday evening) until tech week.

Capoeira festival: Capoeira, a style of African-Brazilian movement that combines dance, martial arts, music and self defense, will be taught and performed at the 2008 International Batizado Festival, to be held May 21-24 at the College of Lake County in Grayslake.
The schedule of events includes:
• A free performance and workshop for community members at 7 p.m. May 21 in room P103 in the James Lumber Center for the Performing Arts.
• Capoeira classes will be offered from 11 a.m.-1 p.m., 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. May 22 and 23.
• A "Batizado" will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 24 in the Studio Theater of the JLC. It is open to all for a $5 entry fee. This ceremony, which traditionally takes place once a year, initiates beginning students and welcomes them into the capoeira community.
The cost to attend the workshops and batizado is $100, with a $5 entry fee to attend the batizado only. Tickets are available at the door. For more information, contact Valerie Alpert at (847) 543-2432.
Art exhibition: "Kathy Weaver and Mary Seyfarth: Whimsical Musings," a new art exhibit by two Lake County artists, will open May 23 at the Robert T. Wright Community Gallery of Art on the College of Lake County Grayslake Campus. The exhibit will open with a reception from 7-9 p.m. on May 23 that is free and open to the public. Music will be provided by Jazz Duo.
Kathy Weaver presents fiberworks and egg tempera paintings that combine technology and art. She will display a series of colorful quilts that humorously depict robots engaged in human activities. The robots operate as actors in a world where the boundary between automaton and humanity shifts. Weaver has exhibited her works both nationally and internationally.
Mary Seyfarth will display ceramic works as well as small sculptures that combine various metals with ceramic elements. Her works also have humorous undercurrents. As a nationally exhibited potter and sculptor, Seyfarth is known for using a special purple clay that is found only in Yixing, China. Seyfarth is the chairperson of the ceramics department at Columbia College in Chicago.
The exhibit will continue until July 3.
Memorial Service: A memorial ceremony honoring the 18 Lake County servicemen who have lost their lives while serving in Iraq and Afghanistan will be held at 1 p.m. May 23 at the College of Lake County in Grayslake.
The service will begin at 1 p.m. next to Willow Lake on the site of the CLC Veterans Memorial Monument, which is currently under construction, in the grassy area between the C Wing and Library/Learning Resource Center. Staff from the U.S. Navy base at Great Lakes will participate in the ceremony. These include a chaplain, a color guard, a bugler and a firing detail, which will offer a 21-gun volley honoring the fallen servicemen.
The 18 servicemen with Lake County ties who are being honored include: 2nd Lt. Matthew Coutu, Army; Sgt. Edward Davis III, Marines; Sgt. Jason Denfrund, Army; SSgt. Donald Farmer, Army; Pfc. Anthony Alex Gaunky, Army; 1st Lt. David Giaimo, Army; Cpl. Jason John Hernandez, Army; Capt. Benjamin Jansky, Army; Sgt. Terry Lisk, Army; Capt. Shane Mahaffee, Army; Lance Cpl. Sean Maher, Marines; Spc. Jaime Moreno, Army; Pfc. Geoffrey Morris, Marines; Cpl. Keith A. Nurnberg, Army; Sgt. James Ochsner, Army; Spc. Uday Singh, Army; Maj. Paul Syverson III, Army; and SPC Wesley Wells, Army.

Truck Driver Training: Information sessions covering the College of Lake County's truck driver training program will be offered from 6 to 8 p.m. June 4 and July 23. At the sessions, prospective students will learn about careers in the truck driving industry and how to obtain a commercial drivers license in just four weeks through CLC's Workforce and Professional Development Institute truck driver training program.

A training sessions will be offered June 23 to July 25. Classroom instruction will be held on the CLC Grayslake Campus, and the driving portion will be held at ATS Truck Driving School in Wauconda.
The CLC truck driver training course provides students with the knowledge and skills to prepare for the state-issued CDL exams, including the permit test, pre-trip inspection test, skills tests and road tests. Home Inspection Course: The College of Lake County will offer a course designed to prepare students to take the state licensing examination for home inspectors.
The home inspection course is designed for individuals who have a working knowledge of contracting, the building trades, architecture or engineering. Appraisers, real estate investors, adjusters and property managers, as well inspectors who need a refresher before taking the licensing exam, will also benefit from taking the course. The course will be offered from 6 to 10 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, June 10 through July 31 at the CLC Southlake Campus in Vernon Hills. The cost is $675. Workshops for teachers: The Continuing Professional Development Department at the College of Lake County will offer 23 teacher education workshops this summer. K-12 educators will learn new tools and techniques for classroom use while obtaining Continuing Professional Development Units toward re-certification.
Courses begin June 16, and teachers can earn from 4 to 48 CPDUs depending on the workshop. The courses provide a mix of online and classroom-based instruction. Teachers can select from workshops such as dramatics in the classroom, forensic workshop for the science education, assessing student learning in the classroom, reading fundamentals in education and a variety of topics on social and behavioral issues.

Juneteenth Celebration: The community is invited to the Fifth Annual Juneteenth Celebration and Conference, to be held from 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. June 21 at the College of Lake County Lakeshore Campus. A variety of fun and educational activities are planned that focus on the state of the African American family and economic rebirth. Juneteenth represents the joy of freedom and commemorates the ending of slavery.
Registration and a continental breakfast will be held from 8-9 a.m. A general session and overview will be held from 8:30-9 a.m. in the Lakeshore Campus conference room, N119, at 111 N. Genesee St. There is a $20 registration fee to attend the conference. The keynote address will be delivered by Congressman Danny K. Davis, U.S. House of Representatives (District 7) at 10 a.m.
Members of the community are invited to attend a variety of workshops. Topics include "The Role of the African American Male: The Power of his Presence," "The Impact of Violence," "Spirituality: What's Your Connection?" "The Impact of Incarceration on Family and Community," "Strengthening Marriages and Family," "Economic and Financial Empowerment" and "Hip Hop Generation, Culture and Leadership."
Outdoor activities in the Lakeshore Campus courtyard area will include a traditional African opening ceremony at 12:15 p.m., a mini-health fair, kids' activities, an African art exhibit, historical displays about Juneteenth and Lake County's role in the Underground Railroad, a vendor fair and food. A "Mr. Juneteenth" contest gala will be held on June 20.

Golf Outing: The CLC Foundation will hold its 2008 Joan Legat Memorial Golf Outing July 21 at Glen Flora Country Club in Waukegan. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Foundation's scholarship fund, which helps deserving CLC students reach their educational goals.
The golf outing will begin with registration at 10:30 a.m. and lunch at 11 a.m., followed by a shotgun start at 12:30 p.m., with several contests. At the conclusion of 18 holes of golf and a "scramble" tournament, the event will continue at 5 p.m. with cocktails and hors d'oeuvres, a silent auction and a dinner buffet at 6 p.m. in the newly renovated clubhouse.

Coach to Speak at Banquet: Jerry Wainwright, head men's basketball coach at DePaul University, will deliver the keynote address at the College of Lake County Foundation's 20th Keith Ryan Scholarship Fund and Sports Banquet, planned for Sept. 18 at Midlane Country Club in Wadsworth.
The Keith Ryan Scholarship Fund and Sports Banquet will recognize inductees into the Lake County High Schools Sports Hall of Fame and the Waukegan Sports Hall of Fame for 2008. The banquet is being held in memory of the late Keith Ryan, a popular sportscaster who spent nearly a quarter century promoting local sports in Lake County.
Proceeds will be applied toward two $1,000 scholarships for CLC students: one for a student pursuing a career in print or broadcast communications and the other for a sophomore student athlete.
