Adult immunizations
The Lake County Board of Health has approved making the adult immunizations program a permanent service of the Lake County Health Department. The program opened as a test in December 2006 to provide adults with immunizations to prevent disabling diseases, such as hepatitis B, pneumonia, meningitis, pertussis and measles. The program is administered out of the health department's immunizations clinic, 2303 Dodge Ave., Waukegan. Clinic times are 1 to 3 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays, and 1 to 4:30 p.m. Thursdays. The clinic is also open from 9 to 11 a.m. every second Saturday. Hours may expand in the near future. Adults can also obtain vaccinations at monthly clinics in Antioch, Lake Zurich, Libertyville, Round Lake Beach, Wauconda and Lake Forest. Fire damages bathroom
The Grayslake Fire Department is investigating the cause of a house fire that damaged a bathroom in the 800 block of Merrill Lane. Fire Capt. Peter Nowak said the department was called to the fire about 10:30 a.m. Sunday. Nowak estimated about $6,000 in damage to the bathroom at the single-family home. No one was injured.
Art show in Vernon Hills
The annual Vernon Hills High School student art show is May 20 in the school foyer, 145 N. Lakeview Parkway. The public can attend the opening reception from 6 to 8:30 p.m. An awards ceremony is set for 7 p.m. The show will be open the next day from 8 to 11 a.m.
Village nixes insurance
Vernon Hills trustees are counting on fair weather for the big 50th anniversary show July 16. The board decided against adverse weather insurance that could have cost more than $19,000 in the event Creedence Clearwater Revisited or Gin Blossoms are forced from the stage. Officials said such occurrences are rare and decided the risk was worth it. "This is one point in time you want to celebrate," Village Manager Mike Allison said. "If you can't celebrate, you're not going to get the bands back." The actual anniversary is July 16 and will kick off the annual Summer Celebration, which runs through July 20. Trustees agreed. "All we're going to do is get our money back for the bands," Trustee Jim Schultz said. "We won't be able to recreate it. Let's roll the dice."
Jail settlement proposed
An Indiana architectural firm will pay Lake County $200,000 to settle a complaint about the company's designs for a recent jail expansion, under a deal being considered by the county board. If the board approves the deal Tuesday, it won't take legal action against RQAW Consulting Engineers and Architects, officials said. County leaders say there were design flaws in the project, which began in 2003. It provided new, larger space for the jail's work-release program and more space for regular inmates.
