Police stake out spot at doughnut shop for Special Olympics
From early this morning through lunchtime, Schaumburg police will be raising money for Special Olympics through their second annual "Cop on the Rooftop" event at two local Dunkin' Donuts stores.
Officers will be volunteering to hold vigil on the roofs and sell hats, T-shirts, pins and travel coffee mugs from 6:30 a.m. until 1 p.m.
Patrons will receive coupons for coffee and doughnuts for their contributions.
The two locations are at 893 E. Schaumburg Road, at Plum Grove Road; and 477 W. Golf Road, one block east of Higgins Road.
Illinois police officers last year raised nearly $100,000 for Special Olympics with the "Cop on the Rooftop" event.
Residents who wish to contribute but are unable to visit a Schaumburg officer at one of the locations today can send a check made out to Illinois Special Olympics to Community Relations Bureau, c/o Schaumburg Police Department, 1000 W. Schaumburg Road, Schaumburg, IL 60194.
Meet Hanna: If you haven't made a visit to the Volkening Heritage Farm in a while, you might want to drop by to meet the newest resident.
Hanna is a milking shorthorn cow, a more common sight in 19th-century Schaumburg than today.
The 5-year-old red-and-white-spotted Hanna was purchased with funds raised by the Schaumburg Park Foundation.
Her presence revives the Heritage Farm's dairy program, in which visitors watch or try their hand at milking.
The Heritage Farm is a re-creation of an 1800s German farmstead where costumed interpreters reenact daily farm life.
"The cornerstone of the dairy program is that visitors see and experience milking a cow," said Dave Brooks, manager of conservation services for the Schaumburg Park District. "We have several other cattle right now, but none are milking."
Brooks said the milking shorthorn was an "all-purpose cow" in the 1800s, used for both milk and beef, unlike other breeds that were usually for one or the other.
Hanna is milked daily at 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Visitors can see the farm adjacent to the Spring Valley Nature Sanctuary at 1111 E. Schaumburg Road from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
