Barrington 7, Elk Grove 4
Barrington had to wait six days for a big two-out hit against Elk Grove.
Bryan Grabowski waited less than 24 hours to deliver another big extra-inning hit.
In Tuesday's completion of a suspended Mid-Suburban League baseball game, Grabowski capped a two-out rally in the top of the 11th inning with a 3-run homer that gave Barrington (13-9, 8-4) a 7-4 victory at Elk Grove.
"We've been thinking about it for awhile," Grabowski said of last Wednesday's game suspended after 10 innings by darkness. "It's been on our minds and we wanted to put it away early."
And Tim Conroy, who finished the suspended game with 3 innings of hitless relief, returned to the mound and made sure there was no late uprising. It kept the Broncos a game behind Schaumburg going into their MSL West showdown at 4:30 p.m. today at Alexian Field.
"It was a big win for us," said Barrington right fielder Russ Zeisloft. "We hold our fate in our hands right now. It's a good position to be in."
Barrington was in this suspended-game position two weeks ago where Rolling Meadows scored 6 runs in the top of the 10th and held on for a 7-5 win.
Elk Grove (11-12, 5-6) junior Josh Daniels, who threw 7 scoreless innings of 2-hit relief last Wednesday, got the first two outs. After Conroy grounded out, he stopped for a brief chat with Zeisloft.
"He told me, 'He hangs it, you bang it,'" Zeisloft said. "I was looking to hit it hard and put a good swing on it."
The lefty-hitting Zeisloft did by lining a 1-2 pitch to left-center for a double. On a 2-0 count, Jack Golek was intentionally walked.
Grabowski, a lefty-hitting infielder, who was 0-for-5, lifted a 1-0 curveball over the fence in right for his third homer of the year.
"It was where I like it, down and in," Grabowski said. "I wasn't sure, but I was hoping the wind would take it."
Grabowski, who came back a few weeks ago from missing three weeks with a broken right thumb, also homered and had a game-winning 2-out RBI single in a 10-inning win at Conant on Monday.
"He's confident right now … and it was probably a good time for him to come up," said Broncos coach Jim Hawrysko. "And today the wind wasn't blowing in 80 miles an hour from right."
Third baseman Chris Holke and second baseman Mark Minner turned Barrington's fifth double play of the game in the 11th.
"We're right there," Grabowski said. "I think we feel good right now. We have good chemistry on this team."
Prospect 16, Hoffman 10: Prospect (12-10, 8-4) moved into a tie for first in the MSL East as Tim Scanlan hit a tying 3-run triple with two outs in the seventh and Matt Smith's 2-run, 2-out double sparked a 7-run eighth.
Scanlan also added a 3-run double to cap a 5-for-6 day with 7 RBI. Griffin Rebecca (3-for-5, 4 RBI) had a 3-run triple in a 4-run sixth, Shane Uhle was 3-for-4 and Ross Axley doubled and tripled.
Kevin Krohm allowed only 2 runs with 7 strikeouts and 1 walk in 5¿ innings of relief. Chris Fett (3-for-4, 2 RBI) and Mike Kiviranta (2-for-5, 3 RBI) helped Hoffman (7-10, 3-8) to an 8-2 lead after three.
Palatine 9, Meadows 8: Mark Sloma's 2-run single capped a 6-run fifth that erased an 8-3 deficit as Palatine (9-15, 6-6) won its fifth straight in the MSL crossover.
Mike Luschen and Matt Wieber had RBI singles and Jeff Emerich had an RBI double in the fifth. Cody Bobbit went 2-for-3 and Alex Foley got his third relief win in the last week in 3 innings.
Kyle Gaedele hit 2 homers and had 4 RBI and Kevin Serna was 3-for-4 as Meadows (12-7, 8-4) lost its third in a row.
Schaumburg 12, Wheeling 10: Steve Mahler's 3-run inside-the-park homer capped a 5-run sixth with two outs as Schaumburg (15-5, 9-3) escaped in the MSL crossover.
Singles by Matt Kiszkowski and winner Kyle Pusateri set up Alec Fontanez's 2-run single in the sixth. Dominick D'Agata hit a 2-run homer and had 3 RBI.
Anthony Ricciardi was 2-for-3 with 2 RBI and Case Jackson homered to lead off a 3-run sixth that put Wheeling (4-11, 4-7) ahead 10-7.
Leyden 14, Downers S. 10: A 7-run seventh gave Leyden (18-3, 13-1) a 2-game lead on Downers Grove South (21-6, 11-3) in the second of the 3-game West Suburban Gold series.
Tim Mackey went 5-for-5 with a homer and 5 RBI, Josh Serrano was 4-for-5 with 4 RBI and Jack Townley went 3-for-5 for the Eagles.
Maine West 2, Deerfield 1: Alex Kopf's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth capped a 2-run rally to give Maine West (11-5, 8-4) the Central Suburban North victory.
Sean Willett singled in the tying run in the sixth. Nate Andersen won it with 2½ innings of relief and Mike Santa Maria got the save.
