Here are some Good Citizens in Wheaton
Wheaton on Monday announced its first round of Good Citizen Award recipients since Mayor Mike Gresk was elected last year.
The city's Community Relations Commission organized the nominations and presented the awards to the winning citizens in three different categories: student, adult and senior citizen.
There were 16 recipients total, two more than last year. Good Citizens are recognized for piling up volunteer hours, accomplishing a good deed above and beyond the norm, or performing a heroic act.
Student
Katelyn Lewis
The Glenbard South High School student was recognized for her work with the National Helpers Network and the Best Buddies Club.
Anthony Carter
The St. Francis High School student was recognized for helping paint the Wheaton Grand Theater, helping clean the Morton Arboretum and his activism in St. Francis' Ecology Club.
Molly Farrell
The St. Francis High School student was recognized for her work with the Christopher Reeve Foundation and Feed My Starving Children.
Ann Fefferman
The Wheaton North High School student was recognized for founding a chapter of the League of Women Voters at her school.
Hannah Lindsay
The Wheaton North High School student was recognized for volunteer work in Cabrini-Green, a construction project in Senegal and her leadership on her school's French Honor Society board.
Mark Weeden
The Wheaton North High School student was recognized for his work with the Downtown Wheaton Association and Wheaton Chamber of Commerce. He is also active in the Washington Elementary PTA, the Wheaton Junior Women's Club and Crimestoppers.
Kelly Hagen
The Wheaton Warrenville South High School student was recognized for her work on her school newspaper and hundreds of volunteer hours at Cosley Zoo and the Humane Society.
Adult
Bruce Danbom
He was recognized for assisting neighbors with debilitating illnesses.
Debbie Houlihan
She was recognized for organizing 902 people in two days to create 204,000 meals to feed 561 children around the world.
Dr. Michael Koehne
He was recognized for his volunteer work with local Boy Scouts, the Serenity House and the Midwest Shelter for Homeless Veterans.
Sally Wiarda
She was recognized for her volunteer efforts through the 100(+) Women Who Care organization. The DuPage County chapter has donated more than $40,000 to DuPage County charities in the first 15 months of its creation.
Senior Citizen
Carol Honeywell
She was recognized for her work with Adam's Park, the Wheaton Public Library Board and the Wheaton League of Women Voters.
Tim and Connie Kluckman
They were recognized for donating more than 1,000 volunteer hours to Jubilee Furniture, which sells used furniture and uses the profits for charity.
Fred Murman and Jane Cox
They were recognized for their volunteer hours with DuPage County's Court Appointed Special Advocates group, Educate the Children International and The Wheelchair Foundation.
