The fair was organized by Karen Lowe of the Hanover Township Youth and Family Services and Paula Randant, the social worker at Laurel Hill. The Laurel Hill PTLH provided hot dogs and pop and water for a fee. The school provided healthy snacks at no cost. Face painting and games were available for children attending the event with parents. The Hanover Park Fire Department brought a fire truck to display, and students were able to explore the truck. It was great fun. The families who attended were able to get information on social services, park district services, health services and township and school district services. Returning to Timber Trails Elementary this spring for the second year is Girls On The Run. The non-profit prevention program encourages pre-teen girls to develop self-respect and a healthy lifestyle through running. The curricula addresses physical, emotional, mental and social well-being. This is the second year that Timber Trails has hosted this program and the only one, so far, in the district. There are 20 girls from third, fourth and fifth grade enrolled this year with five coaches (Maureen Meyer, school nurse, who started the group at Timber Trails; Joan Berendt; Teresa Andrade; Lisa Burnell and Natalie Dazzo). The girls meet twice a week after school and are training hard for their first 5K race while making friends and learning to support each other along the way. Each week one girl takes on a leadership role leading the stretches and helping with materials. The girls will run in the Wondergirl 5K race in Chicago on June 7. Principal Tom Flanigan always offers the girls encouragement and some of the teachers came down last year to run with the team. The girls are doing a wonderful job, with fantastic attitudes. All the girls have really adopted the motto "learn, live, dream, run."
