Library to give teens a say on board
Attention, local high school and college students: The Schaumburg Township District Library is looking for your help and advice.
The library board wants two student trustees to join its ranks beginning next school year.
The positions won't have any voting authority, but the young trustees will be encouraged to speak up and share their insight on ways to make the library more valuable and relevant to teens.
Applicants must be residents of the library district, 16 to 20 years old and enrolled in high school or college during their board term.
The library plans to make applications available from June 1 through July 31. Interviews and callbacks will occur in August, with the aim of having both student trustees in place by the start of the school year.
In future years, the young trustees will have staggered terms of two years each. In order to get the process started, though, one of the first student trustees will have a one-year term instead.
Laughing it up for kids: The Woodfield Area Children's Organization is kicking off its fundraising season this weekend with its second annual "Cocktails and Comedy at the Improv."
The event begins at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Improv Comedy Club on the south side of Woodfield Mall in Schaumburg. The club has its own outside entrance between Sears and Lord and Taylor.
The cost will be $55 per person, which includes appetizers and a full comedy show. The particular comedians performing are not being named in advance. A cash bar will be available as well.
All proceeds go to benefit WACO's programs for needy children in the region.
For more information or tickets, visit the Web sites improv.com or waco4kids.org or call (847) 209-5513.
Several other WACO fundraisers are coming up this spring and summer.
Honoring volunteers: The village of Schaumburg has just honored its volunteers of the year, and now it's time for Schaumburg Township to do the same.
The township will honor nearly 300 volunteers at a special dinner at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Seville in Streamwood.
In addition to these many volunteers, Schaumburg Township will highlight 29 volunteers reaching milestone years and who total more than 230 years of collective community service.
The keynote speaker will be Deacon Ray Doud from Church of the Holy Spirit in Schaumburg, honoring those who "Inspire By Example."
The township will present "Friends of Schaumburg Township" awards to special individuals or associations who gave their time or services to Disability Services, Senior Citizen Services, General Assistance Services and Spectrum Youth & Family Services.
The event falls during National Volunteer Week.
