Briefs: Armed robbery arrest
A Waukegan Township man is being held on $150,000 bond after what police say was his attempt to rob a Waukegan restaurant. Police Chief William Biang said Todd Mayer, 31, entered Bob and Anne's Restaurant at 1739 N. Sheridan Road just before 2 a.m. on Tuesday. He showed a large butcher knife to a cashier and demanded money, police said, but fled when the cashier refused to comply. Witnesses gave police a description of the vehicle Mayer fled in, Biang said, and an officer spotted the car as Mayer pulled into his driveway at 10800 N. Yorkhouse Road. Mayer ran from his car into a wooded area, which Biang said was quickly surrounded by other officers. Mayer eluded the dragnet, but then ran into his house where police captured him a short time later. Mayer is charged with armed robbery, resisting arrest and driving on a suspended driver's license. He is due in court again April 30.

Wauconda Arbor Day sale
The Wauconda Chamber of Commerce and the village of Wauconda will conduct their third annual tree and shrub sale Saturday in observance of Arbor Day. The event will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 610 W. Liberty St., Wauconda, in the parking lot of Acres Group located behind Walgreen's. Trees and shrubs are being offered at reduced prices by Acres Group, a Wauconda landscaper and chamber member. A portion of the proceeds funds an educational program jointly offered by the village and chamber teaching students about the environmental benefits provided by trees. Wauconda Public Works Director David Geary and arborist Chris Esvang developed a program this winter with fifth-grade students from Wauconda Elementary School, Crown Elementary School and Transfiguration Elementary School. Students participated in the National Arbor Day Foundation poster contest. The three winners are Kylee Groh from Crown, Andrea Thiltgen from Transfiguration and Cristina Vitucci from Wauconda Grade School. The chamber will award the winners a $15 gift card and an Arbor Day tree that will be planted at their homes. Each school will receive a tree for its participation. The village public works department will provide free local delivery in the Wauconda area to residents that need assistance transporting their purchases home. Residents can also bring a container for free compost with any purchase. Trees and shrubs must be paid for at time of purchase.
