Clutch Carlson comes through

Hitting behind Kyle Gaedele should give Jon Carlson a lot of RBI opportunities.

Rolling Meadows' left-handed hitting junior cleanup man couldn't have asked for a better situation chance in Monday's Mid-Suburban East baseball game with visiting Buffalo Grove.

After the Valparaiso-bound Gaedele was intentionally walked to load the bases with no outs in the eighth inning, Carlson grounded a single to right through a drawn-in infield to give Meadows (2-3, 1-1) a 7-6 comeback victory.

"There was a lot of pressure on me, especially with 2 strikes," Carlson said. "I tried to shorten up and make contact. I was looking for a fastball and got it."

Carlson went 4-for-5 with a 2-run double that tied it at 3-3 in the third. His leadoff single in the seventh led to a pair of tying unearned runs.

"If he stays patient and takes a short swing he should have some success," said Meadows coach Jim Lindeman. "It's an ideal spot for a hitter with everybody in."

Kevin Serna was hitless his first 4 at-bats when he lined a single to left in the eighth. Dan Lauria (2-for-4) bunted in front of the plate and on what would have been a close play at second, the throw got away to put runners at second and third.

Gaedele, who boomed a solo homer to center in the first, was walked for the third time to set up Carlson. Pat Conlin got the victory with 2 innings of relief of Gaedele.

"We all played real well in the later innings," Carlson said.

BG starter Tom Moran had 7 strikeouts in 5多 innings and appeared to be on his way to a second MSL win. Matt Stadler hit a 2-run homer in the third and his single led to a run in the fifth.

Seth Parker came in with the tying run at second and two outs in the sixth and got Gaedele on a liner to right. After an intentional walk to Zach Borenstein (2-for-2, double, triple), Chris Delaney's bloop RBI single put BG up 6-4 in the seventh.

But 2 of BG's 4 errors in the seventh helped Meadows pull off its comeback.

"We were doing the things we were supposed to be doing and kept the pressure on," said BG coach John Wendell. "It should have been enough. Tommy should have had a win and Seth shouldn't have had a loss."

Prospect 16, Wheeling 9: Wheeling (1-3, 1-1) came out with a 5-run first but MSL East leader Prospect (5-5, 3-0) broke a 7-7 tie with a 4-run fifth and had 15 hits.

Hersey 5, Elk Grove 2: Center fielder Bobby Gehm drove in 2 runs with a first-inning double and saved 2 runs by throwing out runners at the plate for Hersey (6-4, 1-2) in the MSL East win.

Gehm's second assist kept it tied at 2-2 in the fourth and winner Chris James (2-1) had an RBI single as the Huskies scored 3 runs in the bottom of the inning. James had with 5 of his 7 strikeouts in the final 3 innings.

Donny Duschinsky and Chris D'Angelo were 2-for-3 for Elk Grove (2-7, 0-2).

Barrington 9, Palatine 5: Tim Conroy had 3 singles and 2 RBI and got the save for Ryan Nolan as Barrington (5-6, 1-2) ended a 6-game losing streak in the MSL West.
