Fremd 2, Buffalo Grove 0
It started raining toward the end of Buffalo Grove's softball game with Fremd on Friday.
Vikings sophomore Lena Brottman started reigning much earlier in the game -- as the strikeout queen.
The right-hander (5-0) finished with a career-high 14 and a 2-0 shutout at Buffalo Grove.
"I thought Lena just wanted to prove she could have a good game after her last one against Rolling Meadows (an 18-3 win in which she walked three)," said Fremd coach Jim Weaver, whose team is 6-0 and 3-0 in the Mid-Suburban West.
"I was in a zone," said Brottman, who tossed a 2-hitter with no walks. "Everyone came through behind me and my catcher (Marybeth Wesoloski) worked so well with me."
Sophomores Lauren Zaworski and Kelly Voigt started the third inning by reaching on errors.
After back-to-back fielder's choices, the Vikings had the bases loaded when Wesoloski drew an RBI walk.
Tess Dinterman (2-for-2), one of six sophomore starters, then made it 2-0 with a single to left scoring Voigt.
"Tess is batting No. 9 and we feel she is an excellent hitter," Weaver added.
A one-out bloop infield double by freshman K.C. Dunne in the fourth and a fifth-inning leadoff single to center by Meg Miller were the only hits for BG (2-5, 1-2).
Freshman Andrea DiPrima (2-2) threw a 4-hitter Friday with 4 strikeouts.
"Offensively, we did enough to get by but give their pitcher credit," Weaver said. That's was as good a pitching job as anyone has done on us all season."
Bison coach Laura Stock felt her team's errors were costly.
"We made 2 in one inning and it's hard to stop teams from scoring when you do that," she said. "Andrea did a good job. Fremd has been pretty explosive offensively and Andrea did a pretty good job limiting their hits.
Offensively, Stock wanted the Bison to be more aggressive early in the count.
"She (Brottman) threw a lot of good pitches at us early and then we had two strikes," we swung at things outside the zone," Stock said. "But their pitcher did a good job throwing strikes."
Prospect 1, Schaumburg 0: Shortstop Amy Varner's single to center with two outs in the top of the fifth brought home courtesy runner Megan Geraghty for the only run.
Geraghty was running for Knights ace Sheri Weidner, who reached on an error to start the inning.
Jessica King also had a sacrifice bunt in the inning.
Weidner (6-2) struck out nine and walked two, taking a no-hitter into the seventh inning when Rachel Borgman led off with a double and went to third on a sacrifice bunt.
The Saxons tried a another bunt, but Knights first baseman Mary Kate Ward fielded it and threw home to catcher Cyndi Becker to start a game-ending double play.
Becker threw to Varner (2-for-3), who tossed to second baseman Lisa Dominick for the tag on the batter who was trying to get back to first base.
Junior Missy Anderson (5-2) took the loss for Schaumburg (5-2, 1-2).
Prospect is now 6-2 and 3-0 in the MSL East and has not lost in Illinois.
Barrington 4, Hersey 0: Five of the 6 hits for Barrington (11-2, 2-1) were by freshmen, led by Colleen Shandley (2-for-4), Kiersten Tinkoff (2-for-2, double) and Kristin Kuhn (1-for-3).
Lisa Shandley had the other hit for the Fillies.
Barrington junior Kim Cygan (11-2) tossed a 3-hitter with 9 strikeouts and 1 walk.
Senior Mallory Donoghue belted a fifth-inning homer for Hersey (0-12, 0-3) and also struck out two while tossing a 6-hitter.
Jessie Harris doubled for Hersey, which also received a single by Maggie Tunney.
Rolling Meadows 7, Conant 4: Carissa Stewart struck out four and walked none to get the win for Meadows (2-3, 2-1). Stewart also had a double.
Caitlin Adair, Maddie Urban (double) and Mary Loughery each had at least 2 hits for Meadows while Lauren Erkman, Amberly Ward and Jess Genusso collected multiple hits for Conant (3-4, 1-2).
Freshman Kailee Prasbrig took the loss, striking out five.
