Briefs: Diamond Lake referendum discussion

Residents of Diamond Lake Elementary District 76 are invited to an informational meeting regarding a possible referendum in November. The session is 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. today in the library at West Oak Middle School, 500 Acorn Lane. The proposed referendum would increase the education fund to meet projected needs. This would amount to a restructuring of debt with no increase in the tax rate, officials say. Call (847) 331-5141.

Charges pending

The Antioch woman shot Tuesday by Lake County sheriff's deputies has been identified as Alison Hevrdejs. Hevrdejs, 54, of 40365 N. Route 83, was shot in the collarbone and buttocks after she was allegedly wielding a samurai-type sword at deputies. She is in fair condition at Condell Medical Center after undergoing minor surgery on her clavicle. Charges are expected to be filed against Hevrdejs, who remains under 24-hour sheriff's guard. The case is under investigation by the Lake County Major Crimes Task Force.

Flood watch

Fox Lake officials are hoping the heavy rains predicted for today will miss the Chain O' Lakes area. Officials from the National Weather Service said more than one inch of rain is expected starting at 9 a.m. Should that rainfall hit, it could cause the Chain to overflow its banks. Currently, water is on lawns in low-lying areas of Fox Lake, but not damaging houses. Illinois Department of Natural Resource officials said water should rise, even without the rainfall, due to high water coming from Wisconsin. Residents in need of sandbags should contact their public works department.
