Lake Park 3, Resurrection 1

Thirteen was far from unlucky for Lake Park's Missy Mazur.

The senior ace recorded 13 strikeouts in pitching the Lancers past Resurrection 3-1 in nonconference softball action Monday in Roselle.

Mazur was consistent in her punchouts. She struck out a pair of batters in each of the first six innings before striking out one more in the seventh.

"I felt good pitching-wise," said Mazur, who'll continue playing at Iowa. "My drop-curve was working so I got them on that. I used all my pitches and everything worked today."

Mazur scattered 6 hits and walked a batter.

"I think you'll see with the more innings that she pitches, the better she's going to get," Lake Park coach Cray Allen said. "When I found out Iowa wasn't recruiting her for her pitching I was kind of surprised. I think they'll find out that she definitely can help them out."

Lake Park (3-0) gave Mazur a 3-0 cushion by scoring a run in each of the first three innings.

In the bottom of the first, Mazur singled with two out and scored when Alexis Munaco's single rolled by the left fielder.

"We had a couple of miscues and when you play a team of this caliber you almost have to play mistake free," Resurrection coach Mike Marrese said.

The Lancers made it 2-0 in the second when Jamie Pomahac drew a leadoff walk and eventually scored on Lynsey Ciezki's two-out single.

The home team added a run in the third. Samantha Becker, who went 2-for-3, doubled with two out and came home on Vicki Tomaka's single.

Meanwhile, Mazur cruised to her third victory in as many starts. Resurrection (4-4) touched her for a run in the fifth when Sara Cademartori singled with two out and scored on Margaret Cunningham's double, but the Lake Park pitcher stayed in control even as the Bandits sent out at least 1 hit in each of the final four innings.

"No doubt about it -- Missy's a great pitcher," Marrese said. "The thing that impressed me about our team is we never gave up and we threatened in the last three innings against a very good pitcher. We settled down. We were trying to kill the ball in the first three innings."

Hana Somogyl took the loss to fall to 4-2.

It was a big early win for Lake Park. Resurrection reached the Elite Eight last year and has six starters back from that team.

"We knew that they were a good team and I've played against Hana since I was like eight," Mazur said. "We were ready to come out and do our best, and we won. It builds our confidence."
