Zaworski blasts pair of homers to lift Fremd

Fremd's Lauren Zaworski was counted on as a defensive stalwart for Dave Yates' girls basketball team this winter.

When the Vikings opened their Mid-Suburban League softball season Monday, Zaworski was the offensive leader for Jim Weaver's squad.

The slugging sophomore belted a pair of home runs (3- and 2-run shots) and added a 2-run single for 7 RBI as Fremd stopped Hersey 11-1 in 5 innings.

Sophomore Lena Brottman (3-0) fired a 2-hitter, striking out eight of the first nine batters she faced for Fremd (4-0).

The right-hander finished with 13 strikeouts and 1 walks.

Zaworski ended up 3-for-4 with 2 runs.

Other top hitters for Fremd were Stacey Stutzman (3-for-3, 2 runs, 1 RBI), Kelly Voigt (2-for-4) and Alexa Cinquegrani (double).

Hersey's only hits were in the fourth by Maggie Tunney (one-out slap single) and Aleene Morgenthaler (bloop single over first base).

Hersey coach Molly Freeman was a former All-Area standout for the Vikings.

Barrington 9, BG 0: Senior catcher Devinne Wapotish went 2-for-4 with a home run, 3 RBI and 3 runs for Barrington (10-1, 1-0) in the MSL opener for both teams.

Junior Kim Cygan (10-1) threw a 5-hitter with 7 strikeouts and 1 walk to record her fifth shutout this spring.

Other top hitters for the Fillies were Colleen Shandley (2-for-3, RBI), Lisa Shandley (2-for-3, 1 run), and Michal Jane Maropis (2-for-3, RBI , 2 walks).

Freshman Danni Shapiro went 2-for-3, while teammates Stephanie Rudolfi, Andrea DiPrima and K.C. Dunne each had a hit for the visiting Bison (2-4, 0-1).

Prospect 6, Hoffman 3: Sheri Weidner struck out nine and walked one for Prospect (4-2, 1-0) in the MSL opener.

Amy Varner (2-for-4, 2 RBI) and Mary Kate Ward (2-for-3) led the Knights. Senior Jenna Pellus was 2-for-3 for Hoffman (0-5, 0-1), which received doubles from Colleen Roberts, Alex Wulbecker, and freshman Kelsey Pellus.

The Knights took the lead for good at 2-2 in the fifth when Cyndi Becker reached on an error allowing Lisa Dominick to score from third.

Elk Grove 6, Conant 0: Sophomore Stephanie Maday recorded 7 strikeouts, allowing 6 hits en route to a shutout.

A sacrifice fly by Stephanie Dolce gave the Grenadiers a 1-0 lead in the third, followed by Nikki Goranson's RBI single.

Amanda Mertes (3-for-3, RBI, 1 run), Goranson (2-for-4, RBI) and Jamie Campus (2-for-3, RBI) led offense for Elk Grove (8-1, 1-0). Jessica Balzano added a triple.

Schaumburg 8, Wheeling 0: Junior Missy Anderson (5-0) fired a 1-hitter and had a double, while Sarah McGinn homered for the host Saxons (5-0, 1-0) in their MSL opener with Wheeling (0-2, 0-1).

Baseball

Maine W. 7, Schaumburg 5: Alex Kopf homered and drove in 2 runs and Tommy Ross had 2 hits and 2 RBI as Maine West (3-0) handed Schaumburg (3-1) its first loss. Garrett Glover got the victory and Mike Santa Marian earned the save.

Buffalo Grove 10, Warren 3: Bison Chris Delaney was 4-for-5 with a double while teammate J.P. Kulick earned the win for the Bison (2-1).

Mike Ricciardi was 2-for-3 with 4 RBI and a double for John Wendell's Bison (2-1) in the nonconference win.

Evanston 13, Rolling Meadows 9:ŒKevin Serna (3-for-4) and Dan Lauria homered for the Mustangs (1-2) in the nonconference loss.

Stevenson 13, Prospect 8: Tim Scanlan (2-for-4, 2 RBI) homered for the third straight game and Andrew Cardona (3-for-3) homered for Prospect (2-5) in the nonconference loss.

John Coen, Miles Osei, Ross Axley and Shane Uhle had doubles for the Knights. Griffin Rebecca was 2-for-3.

Glenbrook S. 6, Wheeling 3: Bobby Beelen went 2-for-3 for the Wildcats (1-1) in the nonconference loss.

Leyden 12, Proviso W. 2: The Eagles improved to 5-0 overall in the West Suburban crossover.
