Briefs: Trial sought in puppy theft

A Crystal Lake woman accused of stealing a $1,100 puppy from a local pet store pleaded not guilty to a felony retail theft charge Monday and asked for a jury to hear her case. Jennifer L. Zulawski, 38, could face one to three years in prison if found guilty of allegations claiming she stole the purebred Boston terrier 28 from Petland in Crystal Lake. Police say Zulawski allowed her three children to distract store workers while she stuffed the 9-week-old puppy into her bag then left the business. Authorities recovered the puppy unharmed at Zulawski's home the next day.

Board OKs notification plan

The Huntley Unit District 158 school board has approved a policy listing the instances in which the administration should notify the board of a situation. Board members have disagreed on when they should be informed -- most notably after a child got a drug-resistant infection and after a bus driver got an electric shock. Under the new policy, the board will be notified of lawsuits against the district, incidents that lead to firings, bus crashes involving students, arrests on district property and serious injuries on school property, among other situations.
