Park cleanup planned:

The Lake Zurich parks department is seeking groups and individuals to help plant trees and clean up village parks for Earth Day on April 26. More than 200 volunteers are required to handle the job. Work will begin at 9 a.m. Lunch will be provided at 11:30 a.m. For more information or to volunteer, call Rob Hammon at (847) 438-5792, ext. 13, or e-mail hammon@volz.org.

Chain levels higher

Chain O' Lakes water levels continue to rise, Arlan Juhl of the Illinois Department of Natural Resources said. More water is rushing into the Chain from Wisconsin faster than Fox River dams are able to push water out, Juhl said. However, water levels in Wisconsin and along the Nippersink Creek have crested and are dropping. With no additional rainfall Thursday, the Chain should crest and start to recede in 24 hours. If the National Weather Service prediction of a half inch of rain late tonight comes true, that will prolong the high-water levels. Fox Lake residents in need of sandbags can call the village at (847) 587-8570.

Fire destroys home

A vacant ranch home under rehabilitation in Prairie View was destroyed by a fire Thursday morning. No one was injured, but the property was a total loss, officials said. The fire started at 6:12 a.m. at 23087 Prairie Lane near Half Day Road. It took Lincolnshire Fire Protection District firefighters 20 minutes to extinguish the flames that engulfed the home. The fire was reported by a firefighter heading to work. Lake County sheriff's police closed the neighborhood streets for two hours. Lincolnshire and Lake County sheriff's investigators are still trying to determine the cause of the fire.
