Briefs: An apple for Stevenson
For the 17th consecutive year, Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire has received the SchoolSearch Bright Red Apple Award based upon student academic performance, pupil-to-teacher ratio, operating expenditure per pupil, educational levels of teachers and average teacher salary. SchoolSearch is an educational research and consulting firm that publishes online rankings of school systems and works with major companies by providing their relocating families with school information. The Bright Red Apple Award criteria are based on the primary areas of concern for most relocating families. Stevenson is one of 91 Illinois school districts to be honored.
Sherman to run for office
Buffalo Grove resident Rob Sherman said Tuesday he will be slated Saturday by the Illinois Green Party to be its candidate for state representative in the 53rd House District, which covers parts of Arlington Heights, Buffalo Grove, Mount Prospect, Prospect Heights and Wheeling. Incumbent Republican Sid Mathias of Buffalo Grove and Democrat challenger Carol Javens filed for the office in November and ran unopposed in the February party primaries. Monday is the deadline for parties to fill vacancies on their candidate slates.
You can buy a rain barrel
Three Lake County agencies are teaming up to sell rain barrels as a way to promote water conservation. The Lake County Forest Preserve District, the Soil and Water Conservation District and the Stormwater Management Commission are offering the 60-gallon barrels through April 23 for $79 each. They can be ordered online at www.lcfpd.org/rainbarrels or by calling (847) 968-3321. Barrels can be picked up May 9-10, at the Independence Grove preserve near Libertyville.
Electronics recycling
Residents can drop off their electronic equipment for recycling Saturday, 8 a.m. to noon, at the Wauconda Township Highway Department, 505 W. Bonner Road.
