Briefs: Flooding in Des Plaines

The Des Plaines River is expected to crest early today, causing minor flooding. The river is predicted to rise to more than 6 feet in Des Plaines, according to the National Weather Service. At that stage, water creeps into the backyards of homes adjacent to the river on Big Bend Drive. That projected crest is down almost a foot from an earlier projection because heavy rain forecast for Monday night didn't materialize.

Sherman to run for office

Buffalo Grove resident Rob Sherman said Tuesday he will be slated Saturday by the Illinois Green Party to be its candidate for state representative in the 53rd House District, which covers parts of Arlington Heights, Buffalo Grove, Mount Prospect, Prospect Heights and Wheeling. Incumbent Republican Sid Mathias of Buffalo Grove and Democrat challenger Carol Javens filed for the office in November and ran unopposed in the February party primaries. Monday is the deadline for parties to fill vacancies on their candidate slates.

Parenting author to appear

The Barrington Area Unit District 220 PTO Presidents' Council is hosting a presentation by Madeline Levine, author of the New York Times best-selling book, "The Price of Privilege: How Parental Pressure and Material Advantage Are Creating a Generation of Disconnected and Unhappy Kids." The program is scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday in the Barrington High School gymnasium, 616 W. Main St. Levine will talk not only about her book but also address trends she is seeing around the country and how other communities are dealing with those concerns. Vintage fashions at show

Retirees will join college students on a fashion runway Friday when Friendship Village of Schaumburg hosts Harper College's "Sands of Time" fashion show. The free event will begin at 2 p.m. in Friendship Village's Assembly Hall, 350 W. Schaumburg Road. Friendship Village residents will model garments from the '40s, '50s and'60s. Then, sophomore students in Harper's Clothing Construction classes will model garments they've created along with items from Harper's "Wearable Art" collection. The program will also include a segment on contemporary fashion inspired by the Far East.
