Submit Volunteer of the Year nominations by April 1
Time is running out -- but it's not too late -- to nominate an adult, youth or organization for Schaumburg's upcoming Volunteer of the Year awards.
Submissions will be accepted through April 1 and winners will be announced during the Volunteer of the Year Awards Luncheon at 11:30 a.m. April 15 at the Chicago Marriott Schaumburg, 50 N. Martingale Road.
Nominators should submit their own name, address and phone number as well as those of their nominee, and a statement about the nominee's contributions.
Entries should be sent to: Volunteer of the Year, Prairie Center for the Arts, 201 Schaumburg Court, Schaumburg, IL, 60193.
Winners in the individual adult, youth and organization categories will be selected by a panel of judges.
The luncheon's keynote address will be delivered by author and professional speaker Steve Gilliland, who encourages people to use a leadership style that is more purpose-driven than process-driven.
His new book, "Mum's the Word," identifies eight lessons in leadership.
Teen seat on library board: Speaking of volunteerism, high school students in the community may soon have a new opportunity to serve if the Schaumburg Township District Library board follows through on plans to add a student trustee to their ranks.
The idea was proposed this week by 26-year-old Adam Sesso, the board's youngest trustee. He remembers Harper College's successful use of student trustees when he attended the school.
Sesso said the main idea is to bring a younger voice and different perspective to the board, so it better represents the library's patrons.
Although the student trustee wouldn't be able to vote, he or she could raise issues and express opinions on matters before the board.
The board currently is researching the details of the proposal, but hopes to have a specific description of the post finalized by its April 21 meeting.
If approved, the plan is to have the position advertised and filled before July 1.
The job could be filled either by the rest of the board making an appointment from the applicant pool or by the existing teen advisory board voting for someone.
The student trustee will have to be a resident of the library district, a high school upperclassman and 16 or older.
Egg Hunt: The American Indian Center's Trickster Gallery in Schaumburg will hold an Easter Egg coloring and Egg Hunt event at 1 p.m. Saturday.
Prizes and treats will be offered to those who attend this family event.
The Trickster Gallery is in Schaumburg's Town Square, at the southwest corner of Schaumburg and Roselle roads.
