Grooming school donates to canine police unit

The Academy of Dog Grooming Arts in Arlington Heights has donated a bulletproof and stab-resistant vest to a second canine unit of the Arlington Heights Police Department. It was presented at last week's Chicagoland Pet Expo.

Entry deadlines: Car-Dun-al Obedience Dog Training Club has set March 27 as the deadline to enter its April 13 Tracking Tests, which are limited to two. The fee is $50. TDX entry limit is four, and the fee is $100. Entry forms and fees should be sent to Penny Kurz, Trial Secretary, 737 Primrose Lane, Schaumburg, IL 60194-2625. The tests will be held at Red Cut State Park Olson Beach Conservation Area on Harlem Road in Loves Park.

• Rand Park Dog Training Club has set April 9 as the deadline to enter its Obedience and Rally Trials on April 26 and 27 at Sportszone, 1945 Cornelle Ave., Melrose Park. Entry fees for each day are $26 plus $23 for a second entry of the same dog. Entries and fees, made payable to the club, should be sent to Karen Taylor, Trial Secretary, 930 E. Correctionals: The German Shepherd Dog Training Club of Chicago will hold the next Correctional Clinic March 28 in the clubhouse, 4925 County Farm Road, Hanover Park. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and judging starts at 7 p.m. The entry fee is $5 plus $3 for an additional entry of the same dog. Gate and e-mail entry is $6 plus $4. • Rand Park Dog Training Club's next Correction Clinic will be April 5 at For Your Canine, 4233 United Parkway, Schiller Park. Judging starts at 11:30 a.m. with no walk-ins after 1 p.m. Pre-entry fee is $7 plus $6 for a second entry of the same dog. Send the pre-entry and check payable to the club to Jean Eremo, 2511 N. 79th Ave., Elmwood Park, IL 60707. Gate entry is $8 plus $7 for a second entry of same dog. All classes are limited to 30. New classes: River Trails Park District will have Tricks and Treats starting at 7:15 p.m. April 1. Dogs learn tricks and some basic agility and handlers learn about proper nutrition. The dogs also get a homemade treat. The Basic Obedience class starts at 7:15 p.m. April 2. Classes are open to dogs of all ages, run for eight weeks and are held in the multipurpose room at 550 Business Center Drive, Mount Prospect. • Paws R Us K9s Dog Training has a pre-beginner (puppy kindergarten) class starting at 7 p.m. and beginner (on leash) at 8 p.m. April 1. At 9 p.m. there are all levels of advanced training, and drop-ins are welcome. A six-week off leash beginners/novice class starts at 7 p.m. and a novice/rally course at 7:30 p.m. April 9. Advanced rally meets at 8 p.m. and Excellent rally at 9 p.m. These classes are at 503 Sundown, South Elgin. For information, call Penny at (847) 882-5342. Benefit dinner: Orphans of the Storm Animal Shelter's Annual Benefit Dinner 2008 will be held April 14 at Marriott's Lincolnshire Resort. "8 Decades, 800,000 Animals, 1 Life at a Time" will focus on the shelter's history. The cost is $250 per person, a sponsor table for $2,500 and a patron table for $5,000.
