Briefs: Man arrested in sex sting

Winfield police arrested a 53-year-old Rolling Meadows man Monday during an Internet sex solicitation sting, authorities said Tuesday. Martin Freedberg was arrested after police said he arranged over the Internet to meet someone he thought was a 15-year-old girl. Freedberg was charged with a felony count of indecent solicitation of a child. If convicted, he faces up to five years in jail. Freedberg, who has worked for the past 28 years as an Illinois High School Association referee for junior-high and high-school sports, is being held in DuPage County jail on a $150,000 bond. Investigators also obtained a search warrant to confiscate a computer from Freedberg's home.

Pot bust at Meadows park

Two 16-year-olds from Palatine were arrested for possession of marijuana and a Palatine 17-year-old was arrested for intent to deliver marijuana Friday at the Creekside Woods Park in Rolling Meadows, according to police reports. Authorities said officers responded to a report of suspicious activity at the park around 7 p.m. Friday. When officers arrived, they found the teens smoking what police believed to be cannabis. When officers searched the vehicle they found a small amount of marijuana, according to police reports. The two 16-year-olds were released to their parents. The 17-year-old, Taylor R. Dove, of 171 Clyde Ave., was released on bond. Dove's next court date is March 28.

Checkpoint nets 63 tickets

Cook County sheriff's deputies issued 63 traffic tickets, including six for DUI, during a random roadside check near Schaumburg Saturday night. The checkpoint was set up from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. at Algonquin and Meacham roads. Tickets issues also included 26 for lack of insurance and 15 for driving with a suspended or revoked license or no license at all. Two people were also charged with disobeying a police officer for attempting to drive through the checkpoint without stopping. One of those motorists was charged with DUI; the other for driving with a suspended license.

Save the Music benefit

Schaumburg's Pruf Roc Jazz Quintet from Schaumburg High School will perform at 8 p.m. Thursday at Houlihan's of Schaumburg, 1901 E. Golf Road, to benefit VH1's Save The Music program. The campaign aims to bring music back into local schools and raise awareness of the importance of school in a child's education. A $5 donation is required to attend the concert, and one raffle ticket is included in the price. Additional funds will be raised through sales of T-shirts, a chili cook-off and proceeds from the restaurant's signature "mini dessert" menu.

Homeowners workshop

Hanover Township will host a free homeowners workshop at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the township's Senior Center, 240 S. Route 59, Bartlett. The township collector and clerk will discuss topics including what to do if faced with foreclosure, short sales, market value and buying and selling homes.
