Brunswick to change the face of bowling

Remember the days of bowling with soda, cheap beer and fried food?

Well Brunswick Zone XL is hoping to change that image of the sport in Algonquin.

Brunswick Zone XL will open Tuesday at 1611 S. Randall Road, and it will be different than the bowling alleys of the past.

That's because you can hurl that ball down the lane while sipping martinis and munching on shrimp scampi.

The 57,000-square-foot bowling center offers 44 lanes, a laser tag arena, a super-size arcade room, fireside lounge, full-service restaurant, lane-side service and much more.

Wow, laser tag. Talk about a blast from the past.

I may just have to go there one day with friends, because growing up in the 1980s, my parents never bought me a laser tag set. The best I could do was watch the lame cartoon.

Senior service: Need a refresher course on driving?

The Algonquin Public Library still has openings for a two-day driving class next week geared toward seniors.

You'll need to attend both four-hour classes, led by an AARP representative, to receive a certificate of completion.

There will be a snack, but you may want to pack a lunch. Also, check to see if your insurance company offers a discount for taking this class.

The class runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 13 and 14. The cost is $10, made payable to AARP.

Drama at McHenry County College: But don't worry, it's the good kind!

The Black Box Theatre at the school is organizing a production of Steven Sondheim's musical "Company."

It is about five married couples seen from the perspective of bachelor Robert, who celebrates his 35th birthday with his single, married and divorcing friends.

The 14-member cast will delve into multiple discussions of love, commitment and marriage in their search for happiness.

Nearly all of the musical's performances begin at 7:30 p.m. and are scheduled for Thursday through Saturday and March 13-16 and 20-22. There will be a 2 p.m. matinee March 16.

Tickets cost $10 for students, seniors, faculty, staff and alumni. Everyone else pays $15.
