Six Flags gets safety award

Six Flags Great America's Hurricane Harbor has received an aquatic safety award from Ellis & Associates, a safety and risk management consulting firm. The platinum award is the highest annual award by Ellis & Associates and is presented to water parks that score in the top 9 percent in their worldwide audits. The audit program consists of random unannounced audits that provide a snapshot of the lifeguard's ability to meet swimmer protection standards and test ready lifeguard skills, as well as a facility's ability to demonstrate and meet patient-care standards. Hurricane Harbor water park at Six Flags Great America in Gurnee has 26 water slides, a wave pool and an interactive water playground.

Family seeks state help

Relatives of a 17-year-old Round Lake Beach boy fatally struck by a car in January met with Gov. Rod Blagojevich's staff Friday about the investigation into the accident. Alonzo De La Torre was killed Jan. 24, and his family and Hispanic activists are upset significant charges haven't been filed against the driver. Police are awaiting toxicology test results and have said the accident is under investigation. De La Torre's family has filed a wrongful death suit against the driver. A Blagojevich spokeswoman said representatives of the governor's office met with De La Torre's family and activists for about 30 minutes in Chicago. The office will look into the matter, the spokeswoman said. The De La Torres and the activists met with representatives from the Illinois attorney general's office in a separate meeting, too.

Double duty

Brian Sager, the mayor of Woodstock, is doing double duty, this time as McHenry County College's interim vice president for learning and student support services. He succeeds Jim Gray, who retired in December. Before taking this position, Sager was as instructor of animal and plant science and economics, a post he'd held since 1990.
