U-46 school news

Here is what's in the news at Elgin Area School District U-46 schools.

Elgin High

• On Thursday, Friday and Saturday, the musical "Crazy for You" will be presented at 7 p.m. in the Elgin High School auditorium, 1200 Maroon Drive, Elgin. Tickets are reserved seating and can be charged by phone by calling Sally at (847) 888-5100, ext. 5103. Admission is $6 per student and $8 per adult. The musical will also be presented on March 6-7.

South Elgin High

• On Wednesday, a "Disney Send-Off" Choral Concert will be presented at 7 p.m. in the South Elgin High School auditorium, 760 E. Main St. On Thursday, the choir and orchestra are traveling to Disney World to perform in "Magic Music Days."

Canton Middle

• The Canton Middle School Orchestra will perform a concert at 7 p.m. today at the Streamwood High School auditorium, 701 W. Schaumburg Road. Students from the feeder schools --Glenbrook, Hanover Countryside, Hilltop, Oakhill and Ridge Circle elementary -- also will participate.

Kenyon Woods Middle

• On Thursday, the elementary feeder schools (Clinton, Fox Meadow, Garfield, Liberty, Nature Ridge, Wayne and Willard) for Kenyon Woods Middle School will present an Orchestra Concert at 7 p.m. at Kenyon Woods.

Highland

• The fourth- to sixth-grade students at Highland Elementary School in Elgin will present a Spring Sing at 7 p.m. today at Larkin High School, 1475 Larkin Ave., Elgin.

Hillcrest

• On Thursday morning, Hillcrest Elementary School, 80 N. Airlite St. in Elgin, will have a "PAWS" celebration assembly, featuring the Sadecky Puppets in the gym. At these quarterly assemblies, the school raffles off a "grand prize." A school representative reaches into the container of PAWS (pieces of paper children earn for positive behavior), and draws one name from primary grades and one from intermediate grades. Those two winners choose from a variety of age-appropriate prizes such as CDs, DVDs, large stuffed animals, games, etc.

Laurel Hill

• On Tuesday, kindergarten to second-grade students at Laurel Hill Elementary School will present their Winter Sing at 6:30 p.m. at the Streamwood High School auditorium. They will perform "Good Old American Folk Songs."

• On Wednesday, third- to sixth-grade students will present their Winter Sing at 6:30 p.m. at the Streamwood High School auditorium, 701 W. Schaumburg Road, Streamwood. They will perform 1950s rock and roll songs. This will be a "flashback in time," with music, poodle skirts and ponytails.

Liberty

• On Tuesday, the kindergartners will present a choral program at 6:30 p.m. in the Liberty Elementary School gym, 121 Naperville Road, Bartlett.

Otter Creek

• On Tuesday, a Spring Sing will be presented at South Elgin High School at 7 p.m. First-, third- and fifth-grade students at Otter Creek Elementary will participate.

Spring Trail

• On Wednesday after school, the Battle of the Books team from Spring Trail Elementary will compete at Wayne Elementary.

• On Thursday, the sixth-graders present a World's Fair for family members from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. in the Commons, 1384 Spring Valley Drive, Carol Stream.

Sycamore Trails

• The students in second through fifth grade will present a Spring Sing beginning with the younger children at 5 p.m. today at Bartlett High School, 701 Schick Road.

Washington

• On Thursday, kindergarten to third grade students at Washington Elementary School in Elgin will present a "Sing" at 7 p.m. at Larkin High School, 1475 Larkin Ave., Elgin.

Wayne Elementary

• On Wednesday, fifth-grade teacher Paula Valleskey has organized an Energy Conservation Assembly for the fifth-grade students at noon in the Wayne Elementary gym, 5N443 School St. The program is being paid for from a grant she received from the BP Corp. and Fabric of America. An Environmental Education organization S.C.A.R.C.E. (School & Community Assistance for Recycling & Composting Education) will present a program which will include an "Energy Bike" where students can see & feel how "pedaling energy" is transformed into light energy. Commonwealth Edison will also be participating and will be donating 100 compact fluorescent light bulbs. After completing an assignment on energy conservation, each student will get one CFL bulb for his/her family, to begin or reinforce the significant energy savings of converting to this type of light bulb in their homes.
