English not required for legality here
For the record, speaking English and illegal immigration are two separate issues.
One does not need to know English to become a legal resident of the United States.
In addition, many Puerto Ricans who live here in Elgin may not know English because they grew up in Puerto Rico, but still are U.S. citizens.
You cannot assume those who may not speak English are not legally here.
Not only that, but most Hispanics here in Elgin are bilingual, which gives them a definite edge in our growing global economy.
So the next time you feel like criticizing someone for speaking Spanish behind you in the store by assuming they are not legally here, think again.
He or she could just be a U.S. citizen who understands every word.
